Is it similar to FAANG where the job is mostly people management or is it more of a TLM role where EMs are to an extent hands-on? How is the culture like? WLB? Process driven engineering delivery? How is performance management done? Context: I’ve been a hands-on TL/EM in my past. Managed to lead/build pretty successful teams and positive cultures. After spending more than a year at Meta I’m now pretty certain that this is not my cup of tea. Considering cutting my loses and moving on. TC: 600k YOE: 15
Can you share more details about why the EM role at Meta is not a good fit? I'm trying to learn more about it. Thanks!
It’s handling logistics 95% of the time without any real authority or autonomy. Shit job really. In other companies, TPMs do what EMs do here. E6 is a much better role but will have oncalls.
Thanks. By logistics, you mean things like sprint planning, coordinating with other EM teams and running scrum for your team? Is the piece you miss being a technical leader? Can you not get your assists by participating in code and design reviews or joining architecture discussions?
curious about this at various companies : anyone from uber, stripe, airbnb, square, door dash - comments please?
