Been laid off for about a year, had time to travel, do personal things, work on some side projects, now I’m getting ready to get back into the jobs market. My first choice would be to work as a full-time employee back in tech, but I keep getting hit up by contractors who from companies like Airbnb and Etsy for Program Manager type roles. So my questions… Is it worth quickly getting a job as a contractor, OR keep plowing away and applying to full-time rules like I have been doing and hopefully land in an FTE role in the next few months? Does anyone have thoughts? I’m a single single man with no family, so I’m very flexible, I haven’t had much luck, attaining a new full-time role the past few months. Also, if I were to do a contracting role at Airbnb would it hurt my ability in the future to become a full-time hire later on? And most importantly, does Airbnb treat their contractors in a nice way, or more in the way that Microsoft treated their contract tires like they were second-class citizens. Are we mixed in with other team, or do me have bright badges saying we are contractor’s ? Any insight would be helpful! Thank you fam 😉#Airbnb
Take it and look for a job in the meantime
How much YOE are you and what’s the pay for the contract role? I’d personally take it and continue to look for FTE, although there’s a decent chance you’ll eventually get a FTE position in the next few months as companies figure out their headcount for the year so it would also make sense to focus 100% of time on that
10 YOE, pay is $105/hr
Take it and get out ASAP
I have not seen contractors treated any differently. Contract TPM roles are usually for high visibility fast paced projects with high expectations. You probably need to meet or exceed those to be considered for full time.
Thanks! Do the contractors have different email aliases or different badges, or are they blended in with the other FTEs?
Blended. Everyone treated the same.
Airbnb treats contractors very well and sometimes converts. Honestly it’s such an intense place for program management I would recommend anyone do a contract stint there first to see if you like it.
This is super helpful! I appreciate the inside scoop. Curious, when you say “intense”, are you thinking of any particular area such as complex projects, long hours, navigating strong personalities, ambiguous problems needing to be solved, etc? Just trying to get a feel for what I may be getting into. Sincerely appreciate it!
I’m also curious as well. I’m pursuing the role in Guest/Host. I’ve heard Airbnb is relatively chill and assumed TPM role no different.
