Airbnb is just a scam
Airbnb hosts charge a hefty cleaning fees and want us to leave the apartment clean. The customer service is a joke. The experience is an even bigger joke. The host didn’t respond when we were late by 5 min due to NYC traffic. The customer service said that the host denied to refund and they can’t do anything. This business model is more than a scam.
Airbnbs are only useful if you have a large group that wants to stay together

Customer service defers to the host in some cases. We saw a mouse in a unit and luckily the host agreed to a refund, but why do we need their agreement? Airbnb is great when you have a large family. Otherwise hotels are probably cheaper

This just happened to me. We paid a cleaning fee and host gave us instructions to clean

Why would being “late” to an Airbnb be an issue? Were they meeting you to let you in? Any Airbnb I’ve been to has had door codes to get in. In regards to time of arrival, the only issue is arriving early. Both times I had this happen and asked the host if I could drop off my bags earlier they were nice about it. We use Airbnbs for the convenience of having a kitchen since we have two picky eaters.
Hotels are in US are absolutely 💩 and total rip-off. Good to see them facing competition.
Airbnb is great for small kids. Hotel air needs a lot of circulation even when off. It's too cold and dry. Airbnb is also great for chilling in in case it rains outside and you want to stay in a bit and even cook a bit.

cleaning fee is a way to get around paying airbnb tax. Hosts asking to clean after charging 100s is them being selfish. Cleaning is the most expensive recurring cost. To make profit you get the guests to clean and use professional service for a 15 minute top up. Airbnb stopped being good when hosts started running multi unit rental business with shared cleaning crew working across several units far apart.
Airbnb’s pricing isn’t very flexible on volume discounts other than weekly so hosts use the cleaning fee as a sort of fixed fee (makes shorter stays more expensive). They aren’t necessarily spending that all on the cleaning. Airbnb still takes a fee/tax on it whether you call it cleaning or nightly rent.
Money is fungible. All fees are a way to advertise a misleading upfront price, nothing more. And yes some of the hosts think they are clever by making their customers basically double as the housekeeper. Once I was left a BINDER of chores to do, including restocking the complimentary mints.
