About to join Airbnb soon. I'm wondering, for those of you with young kids, how do you deal with Airbnb's rather restrictive sick policy (5 days), which is now at the CA state minimum? Those of you with small babies/toddlers know that 5 days is like 1 sick cycle (e.g. 2-3 days kid stays at home, 2-3 days you get sick). And babies get sick every month when they are at daycare. And worse if you have multiple kids. How do you deal with that with only 5 days a year? It's not like Airbnb's PTO policy is particularly generous either (15 days). Coming from a place with unlimited sick days, I'm pretty worried about this. Do you all just exhaust your sick days and PTO every year for your sick time and kids sick time? Is it chill enough where if you run out of sick days, you can just kind of take off and cancel your meetings without using an official sick day or PTO? Any internal discussion about increasing the sick day policy? I'm talking about legitimate sick days where you cannot work or take meetings. Not kind of sick where you can still work from home, because having a sick kid means no working at all that day until they are asleep.
I wouldn’t worry about this as long as your manager/team is understanding. I don’t think you need to log every sick day
I don’t log a sick day for myself or my kids when they are sick. . Never have in 2 years. If you can slack a few messages, it’s not a sick day. Cancel meetings and let folks know that you won’t be able to attend.
I haven’t worked at an employer in over a decade that expected sick days to actually get logged. I would hope Airbnb is the same. Only in cases of extreme length perhaps like an illness lasting a full week plus.
