American Airlines $250,000 sign-on bonus is higher than FAANG https://nypost.com/2023/11/08/business/american-airlines-offers-250k-bonuses-to-nab-fedex-ups-pilots/ "American Airlines is on a hiring spree — and is offering $250,000 bonuses to poach FedEx and UPS pilots to jump from piloting cargo carriers to working as captains on its passenger planes. PSA Airlines, a regional carrier owned by American, is dangling the six-figure bonus for UPS and FedEx pilots who can help fill a gap in service to smaller US cities — which has widened over the past year as smaller airports have been forced to cancel flights due to a lack of pilots, according to The Wall Street Journal. PSA is reportedly desperate for aviators with enough experience to join the cockpit as a captain after being forced to keep many of its planes grounded."
isn’t becoming a pilot a pain in the ass? you either like serve in the military or you have to make pennies on the dollar flying like tulsa to lubbock texas or random places until you climb the totem pole
Yes it is, there’s a shortage because of how annoying it is to get your hours. You either pay tons of money, or you become an instructor for small planes and get your hours that way. It’s a journey to get up to a good commercial airline
That’s all true. But most people who become professional pilots have loved flying since they were kids and enjoy doing lots of it, even in the middle of nowhere.
25k each year I guess?
It takes a lot of toiling to become a commercial pilot. Most SDEs at FAANG clear 400-500k in less time than that.
Rajesh Pilot?
They are basically truckers or bus drivers in the sky.
This is why we need autonomous planes lol
Planes already have great autopilot and autoland. Automatic takeoff has been demonstrated as well.
Airlines have only themselves to blame. They killed the pilot pipeline by outsourcing regional routes to penny pinching companies that make it very financially and WLB unattractive for would be pilots to join the field and stick with it early on in their careers.
That job must suck horribly to have to dangle $250k sign on bonus. I bet they have to stick around too for a while to keep the bonus.
