I’m on a team of ten people productionalizing NLP models in Alexa. Pretty clear to me that gpt-4 can replace our whole system. But we have like a year long roadmap. How am I supposed to even put on a straight face doing this work? Like we have massive systems, COEs, heavy oncall, and for what? Alexa is very outdated and needs to pivot very fast. Management clearly knows this I can’t even switch jobs because it’s so hard to get good comp elsewhere
I would get out of internal Alexa related work before the music has stopped. Easier for Amazon to just acquire or license something further along…
Totally agree. If the strategy is not pivoting towards adoption of gpt like models then alexa, google home all will be irrelevant. Wont be surprised if microsoft finally comes up with their own smart speaker with chatgpt models. Alexa, google home and siri must pivot.
These are all widely used talking alarm clocks
They know this, and they will. While it might seem that these companies are ‘losing’ to ChatGPT, it’s important to understand that second mover advantage is real, and these companies will leverage it. Imagine Google home or Alexa being even half as good as ChatGPT - bloody hell, that would be awesome.
Do it for job security!
If someone releases chat gpt speaker. Im buying it. The inly problem - chatgpt is kind slow for speakers (for now)
I think you would tolerate prefetching delay, given the high quality of answers
It’s not very delayed, there is a voice app now
I like my Alexa. It’s convenient for getting the weather when I’m about to head out or for playing some music occasionally.
This is mostly a cost to Amazon, and another system could easily do those and more
Do me a favor. Write an Alexa skill passing through Open.ai API calls to ChatGPT (I assume text2speech and speech2text are on you), and throw away or burn down that garbage you were building all those years. At least it would make Alexa usable for my kids. I could consider even buying a subscription
If you aren’t able to use Alexa it’s you. I have no problem at all getting Alexa to understand what I ask or finding the information I’m seeking.
Aha.
Aren't the llm's trained on older data. So Alexa can still be used for real time questions.
That’s not how it works, new info can be used by llms
Alexa and Google home are garbage right now. Alexa more than Google home. Google can still integrate bard but Alexa has no fallback. Only a matter of time before Microsoft or any other company comes up with gpt4 powered ai assistant device for 20 dollars. That’s the endgame
Way way cheaper for Alexa to train/buy llm and integrate than another player to sell hundreds of millions of b assistant devices for $20. Why do you think Alexa loses B/yr
Alexa was always dumb when compared with google. Can’t even retain conversation flow. Pretty soon with Chatgpt in devices and google’s , Alexa would be dead. Start looking a new job.

Alexa is still cool. You’ll be fine.
Bro the whole system can be replaced by openai
But Alexa is already everywhere. People paid money to have that creepy hockey puck thing and then got all their things working with it. There’s more than the tech. There’s the ecosystem around it and the manufacturing partnerships and shit like that.
