Peaceful Protest Hasn’t Worked and Has Been Met With Aggression.
Amzn is becoming too bloated. Too slow. Complexities grows. Something has to be done before it ends up like GE! https://www.cnbc.com/2023/03/28/alibaba-says-it-will-split-into-6-units-that-can-raise-funds-and-ipo.html
Splitting is the right move. Force innovation and frugality to make Amazon profitable. AWS would no longer be forced to subsidize dumb projects like LOTR. But I don’t think it will ever happen.
If Amazon splits then expect major (like 25-35%) layoffs in non aws side which is loss making.
Outcome maybe better, things can go faster instead of dealing with lots of bearucracy
Personally I think Amazon would benefit. The risk of mega tech is that we might carry inefficiencies across the whole org in the name of corporate synergy. For example, if copilot tripled developer productivity and code whisperer did not, the entire company is at a severe disadvantage compared to external teams, because Amazon will only use Codewhisperer. Now apply this same argument to our Gitfarm, to Brazil, to pipelines, to every single AWS service, to Appsec process, etc You end up with a system where unless every single product we make is best in class in all use cases, we are forcing inefficiencies on internal customers. This in turn makes it harder to deliver best in class products, which creates a negative feedback loop on our collective productivity.
If Amazon splits then Whole Foods is done
Before it’s GE? It’s Day 2 baby. We’re gonna get some Microwave guy to run Prime Video pretty soon.
Can AWS and e-commerce split? How can non-profitable segments have a chance without a profitable segment carrying them?
They both profitable
