I have gotten the sense from some Googlers that the hiring bar for SWE is different for certain parts of the company. If you apply to Nest, could you later transfer to cloud and vice versa? It sounded like people applied to the part where they would interview best, then after one year, transferred to the part where they wanted to work and grow. Is there any truth to this? Are the TCs the same for the roles of the bar is different? TC: $350k
Swe hiring bar reasonably consistent
Google Cloud is definitely the easiest to get into. Although the HC is same, interviewers asking the questions and interpreting the answers changes the result of interview significantly. Cloud is full of industry experience people - rightly so as this is enterprise game.
How come having industry experience people make it easier to get into?
I don’t know if it is easier, but is if different. Experienced people will value results more than academics.
You can kind a weaker spot in the wall and get in and move to more interesting teams later on. But if you are not good enough, then you will find it hard to sustain your performance on stronger teams.
If you want to move from other bets to google, most times you need to interview again. But inside Google, you only need to have a team matching interview.
Is gcp considered a different bet?
This is most interesting if you think you can achieve a higher level in one point in “the wall”.
Leveling seems mostly consistent. If fact if you level up at a weaker spot, you are getting yourself in trouble if you try and move to better/stronger teams.
No. Hiring committee is independent
