Trying to gradually reduce my exposure to Facebook and Google knowing everything about my life. Next step is to get my email away from them. Gmail is a good product but it's unfortunately a Google product, and Google simply knows too much about me. Not convinced that Outlook mail is going to be a big privacy win but it might be better since Microsoft has been less successful in prying into my life. But they are likely trying, so philosophy.. Sure as hell not going to Yahoo mail after their security fiasco. After that, what? I used to run my own mail server and I guess I could again but it's a bit of a pain. Looking for a trustworthy email provider that will be around for a long while and won't sell me to advertisers. Willing to pay for that. One option is to go full privacy nut and use something like ProtonMail but you give up s lot to get that level of privacy, no searching your mailbox! I just want an email provider who won't actively sell me out, but may give PM a try. Suggestions?
I set up a free account to try it out but I'm wondering if the privacy overkill means too many compromise. I'm not trying to keep the NSA from reading my mail, just don't like being harvested by Google.
What is there to compromise, it's email? The only challenge of email is spam. Keep your Gmail for dumb shit and use protonmail for everything important. Your bank is not likely to sell your information
Have you considered a private email server? It was the rage few years ago.
I hear it works well for some political candidates. You can even wipe it with a cloth!
I use proton mail, seems to work for my needs, search is nowhere near google level, obviously, but if you set up proper filters you can get pretty far.
How's spam filtering?
Amazon knows a shit load about you too. You planning to switch to Walmart or shop offline?
Amazon knows a lot about stuff I buy (from them) and uses it to sell me stuff (from them). That is no big deal.
And Google knows a lot about stuff I look for and uses it to sell me stuff I probably hadn’t realized I needed yet. What’s the difference? Why is one better than the other?
Run exchange from a desktop in your living room. That's what I do
Protonmail very good encryption and privacy
Setting up your own server ala Hillary
That might be better than storing data with Gmail. Your personal server might or might not be hacked. Google will 100% read your data.
Seriously what do you store in your email..
Hotmail or outlook
Have mercy on yourself and never ever use these shitty email tools. The worst
I still use my hotmail from grade 7. Works like a charm, less mining of data.
Set up your own server...
You mean like Hillary 🤣

iCloud email. You know Apple’s stand on privacy and its hatred for “data companies”.
Apart from leaking millions of kids’ iCloud photos...
