I'm on the internal finance side of Google. This past year, Google has been announcing that they are being frugal, cutting budgets across PAs, pausing hiring, cutting/reducing perks, and ofc the firing. However, I see some teams/individuals reporting thousands worth of fun activities and what are clearly gift purchases categorized as "work related". GCP consultants easily spending 20k+ on one week trips (per person!). Countless amounts of fine dining. My colleagues tell me they all sort of knew it, and says I'm just gullible. Did everyone else suspected this as well?

Cleared Amazon onsite, but lowballed.
Sales weasels have always lived large on the company dime.
Sales weasels keep the light on. It’s their job to screw everyone over, we should respect that. It’s everyone else’s job to keep them in line.
Who doesnt like fine dining and business class on company’s dime…sales would be a miserable job without them
Engineering gets screwed so management and outwardly facing workers can party. Rules for thee, not for me.
Typically Engineering gets the RSUs though so more potential upside. Though in the good times the customer facing one's get the instant cold hard cash
The sales guys get paid much more than Eng though.
Aren't GCP consultant travel expenses being billed to their client?
Not in SaaS
Idk at Google but at Microsoft they bill a hourly rate and any incurred cost during those billing hours is handled by Microsoft. Now they are billing line $1-2k a hour …
I am not sure you should casually release internal information like this.
Who cares what you think... Keep thinking and sh*t#&@$-
Isn't it the purpose of blind?
20k to Google is like 2cents to average engineers
10k is not alot, I've spent this as a TL many times pre-2020 when I flew from the US to SYD.
What kind of work requires a tech lead to fly internationally?
partner engineering (working with engineers at other large firms) like Facebook Gaming I remember had a lot of travel
Departments with more revenue spend more. This happens everywhere and finally leads to a catastrophic collapse. Symantec died this death thanks to enterprise group partying all the time
SEP Sales in particular, from what I gathered. No?
“Suspected” gave it all away
Non native guy. Prolly Indian
Good god I didnt know I was gonna turn Indian for losing my train of thought and mixing up words. My fault
Gift purchases above base amount are usually flagged to compliance?
He's saying they are submitted as business expenses and not gifts
You aren’t gullible, that’s the cost to get and keep those huge contracts.
Is it normal for consultants to fly 10k+ business class flights? genuinely curious
Yes, it is. If those perks are not there, the consultants won't be happy to fly. Also they would arrive tired. This will show up in customer interactions.
