Question about women in their 30’s?
I am currently working as a Business Analyst for a start-up in the Bay Area and I think that I am being severely underpaid, overworked with 0 benefits. So let me tell you what I do at the startup. I write SQL queries but that is the extent of my technical skills. I write technical requirements, I do user acceptance testing, I create and maintain training documents and company wiki pages. I took this low paying job because I wanted to move to the Bay Area to live with my boyfriend. It worked out great for us also the company sponsored my visa. However, Bay Area is expensive and money does not go a long way here. Can someone help me understand why Am I being paid so low? Is it because I am not technical enough? Or is this how much start-ups pay for Business Analysts in the Bay Area? Or is it because women are usually underpaid? I don’t trust Glassdoor because it always shows less salary TC: 90,000 YOE: 6 Update: My responsibilities are more than what I mentioned above also lead scrum session, manage releases, regression test the code release. I also provide training to new employees #businessanalyst #salarycomparison #salaries #startup #startups #startupoffer #techcareer #recruiting
you can only find answer to this question if you leetcode, interview, negotiate and get a higher job offer. until that happens - assume you are being severely overpaid
I agree!
Yeah, ppl who don't make 250k, are making 500k
Pay is depending on your overall skill set. More importantly: negotiate before taking the offer. No company would love to write a decent check, unless you "ask" for it.
I asked for more but they did not give. They offered me 15k less than my asking. They said that they are paying other BAs the same. as what they offered me. I think they knew my desperation to move here that’s why they low balled me
This doesn’t seem that low paying for what you’re doing. The wiki and training updates seems a bit like housekeeping. BA is like a product manager lite, which is what you’re doing, but with none of the responsibilities of a PM that are higher paying. PMs have full influence over the product, and lead teams to drive business goals. If you want more pay, look at enhancing your skills and experience and find a different job. But this one seems fair in terms of pay IMO.
What do you mean 0 benefits? You don’t get health benefits? Don’t assume all the TC numbers you see on blind apply to you. Become a SWE if you want more money. You seem young(er) in your career and from what I can tell, your job doesn’t seem that difficult. $90k seems low but aligned with actual job duties + sponsored visa. If you want to chase that TC, find another company who can offer you more. That’ll be a good parameter of whether you’re truly worth more or $90k. P.S. without knowing your background, you basically took an entry level job doing entry level things. So no, I don’t think you’re underpaid. Maybe +/- $5-10k.
Yeah they do provide me health insurance but I also have to work weekends and 10 hr weekdays. I am helping with various projects. I feel that they paying a lot less than my worth. Yes I am younger and in a entry level job. I come from a business background so SWE will not be my cup of tea. I did apply to jobs and the recruiters offered me 130 - 150 TC depending on which company I applied for. But there is usually only one position open and it is very competitive. Meanwhile I can help but think if I am being under paid at my current job with my current role and responsibility.
Just because you applied to other positions with 130-150 TC doesn’t mean that’s your worth. You need to actually get the job first. Yea it’s competitive so if you’re really that good, you’d get the job no problem, in which case, yes you are underpaid. Otherwise it’s all just words.
Yes, do not trust Glassdoor it's outdated and way lower than actual salaries. I don't think it's bc you are women either as I don't think women are underpaid in tech. I think you are underpaid but definitely not severely (maybe slightly) and not for your situation cause as a business analyst in a startup you are not that crucial as eng or product. I'm even surprised that they sponsored your visa. I have friends from top MBAs who struggled to find any business analyst opportunity in Bay Area and had to go back to their country. If you want more pay try faang or other public tech companies. Btw are you aware of levels.fyi? It's the most accurate these days. Filter for your position and your YOE and you should get an idea.
Agreed!
Why not upgrade your skills and get into data science/product opportunities? ..
Could you get a 250+ TC at FAANG? Yes. Could you get a 100+ TC at your current startup? No one knows. Could you pass a FAANG interview? Why don’t you try it and find out. 90K isn’t a bad comp for SQL and documentation in some industries. I have a hard time estimating your worth without knowing the scope of your duties or more about your org (they could be on the verge of bankruptcy). It would be the equivalent of asking “I work on excel sheets all day and make 25/hr some investment bankers work on excel sheets with a 300k TC should they bump my pay to 300k?”
I doubt I will be paid 250+ I recently applied to FAANG and in my recruiter call, she agreed with 150 TC. Everyone wants to work with FAANG and so there is a lot of competition. Let’s see now! Try current company isn’t on the very of bankruptcy but the profits are being plowed back into the business to pay for our salaries.
Yes
