Am I insane

24 year old guy with no visa issues Amazon is slow and boring and I feel like my career is suffering. I also miss the college days where everyone was miserable pulling all nighters abusing stims and cranking out coding assignments. I kinda want to apply to Twitter. Yes I think Elons an asshole, but regardless of that, it feels like the best place to grow as an engineer right now tbh. There’s huge scale, tons of opportunities for ownership, and I feel like it could be exciting for better or worse. Also is twitter even hiring? There’s no new roles open TC: 170k or something idk

Why not take Twitter as your second job? You could do remote for Amazon

Given Musks new rules I don’t think I’d survive lol Amazon isn’t exactly a walk in the park, it’s just BS work that delivers no real value

Outsource tedious tasks to WITCH or Upwotk, Toptal, UpStack. Then, you promote yourself to Manager as a senior engineer!

Me too

I was in a similar boat when 20. I would value my own time now that I am 30. Maybe I will have different ideas when I will be 40, 50 and so on.

Coast at Amazon and use that time to build your own projects during work hours. You can create systems as large as you want. Build an Uber competitor for example. You can probably build a Twitter clone within 1 week if you wanted to.

Who’s gonna pay for the infra? I can build a twitter clone in 1 day if if only has to work on my laptop.

Amazon PoorMoney Nov 17, 2022

Lol. OP is bored and wants to learn. I don't think he cares paying $10 for infra. Amazon should have provided an AWS account to him anyways. He can spin up whatever he wants. He is doing this during work hours too. How long he wants to spend on these projects is up to him. If this was about TC, OP should be applying to Jane Street, Citadel, etc. However, if you are using company AWS account, and you happened to create something special, Amazon would own it. So choose wisely if you want to pay for infra or just use Amazon resources lol.

Yes. But why should that stop you? It didn’t stop Elon.

Make a pros and cons list. Youve mentioned the pros quite well. As cons, your wlb might suffer. If you are concious about the brand image of the company you work for in front of your friends and family, it might not be the best. (Its definitely a thing and really might take a toll on you when everyone around you keeps asking you why you did what you did and then potentially judges you). Another con is its not a fair place to work. Talks abt free speech but even if you appear to brush elon the wrong way youre fucked. At some level this will translate to you having to be a yes-man/woman which gets frustrating if the person youre having to say yes to doesnt know jack shit.

Sounds like me at 24. I ended up leaving software altogether for the hustle culture of consulting. Did that for 3 years and I never want to pull another all-nighter in my life. I'd say consider joining a startup or get together with a group of people and start a company. It's a much better use of your energetic years than working for the man.

Amazon ICXy71 OP Nov 17, 2022

Yeah been looking at seed and series A companies Wish I could start my own thing but I have no network. Kinda hoping my next move will provide that

Do a startup. You’ll love the autonomy and impact at a small spot. Our engineers only need to work 40 hours a week, but some are really into their projects and put more time. No expectation for it, but it’s definitely one of those environments where if you are passionate, want to learn/grow…here’s the keys to the house. Have at it.

Trust me man. You don’t want to work here. Stay away.
