I get the sense that start ups are unstable and wlb can be shit, with lower pay. Am I wrong to think that? I'm going to need another job soon and will have to keep my options open
Lower pay, more experience. But you only want the experience to get higher pay, so I am perplexed at those who have multiple offers and choose the start up
I know very very few people who manage to leverage a role at a startup into RSUs/shares that payout upon exit. Loved the intense pace, multi-hat, learn by fire atmosphere as a younger dev. At this point in my life though, I would not go back to startup. Large corps for me now.
Depends, but generally, yeah, you're right, they tend to be more unstable and you tend to do more. I find base pay to be decent, maybe 10-20% lower. But you suffer from lack of bonus and no liquidity.
The work is much more exciting and meaningful. Ultimately you have to ask yourself what excites you the most: is it the grunt work required to maintain existing infra and services at big tech that doesn’t require any problem solving skills or innovation, or constantly building new things and solving complex problems at a startup?
