[Posting for my spouse] Sorry for the long post. My spouse's role got impacted at Amazon during the recent layoffs. They were rated "Exceeding High Bar" in March of 2023. Also, manager encouraged them to go for promotion. Unfortunately role got impacted while preparing for promo. They couldn't land a role internally even after clearing the interviews. The reason was not clear then. After moving out of Amazon, one of the managers showed interest to rehire. But, then informed unintentionally that my spouse is ineligible for rehire. Spouse confronted the past manager about this and they mentioned that it was not unintentional. Probably for some quota reasons? There was never a negative remark till the layoff was announced. We got to know the real reason why my spouse was not through in any position even after clearing the interviews. Manager tried to console by saying, he will write a positive testimonial on LinkedIn. This call was recorded. Reached out to HR and they started investigation (at least they said, they did start). Not hoping for any positive outcome though. Is there any possibility to proceed legally through some employment attorney as there was never a record of negative remark, Very good past performance rating, unfairly tweaked feedback without my spouse's consent or discussion ? Spouse went into some shock with all this and is currently taking psychiatric treatment. TC prior to layoff was $240K #layoff #severance #amazon #performance #legal
im sorry this happened to you and your wife OP. She should really spend some time off the grid if its possible. Regardless of what HR/Past manager found and do after conclusion of investigation, ask yourselves this; do you really want to work with those people again after the shit they made you go through? Exactly, do good job then axed then unexpectedly stick a red flag on your back? Time to move on and hopefully she takes the time to recover and move on from this mess
So real reason is quota? Wtf? After giving exceptional performance? Backstabbing of the highest order.
So you recorded the call ? That is a really bad move. No company want to hire a person who wants to blackmail them.
Welcome to America. (Fuck yeah!)
There is a life outside Amazon. Ask your spouse to look for better opportunities outside.
Based off your first sentence, she wasn’t targeted individually, she was part of a mass layoff. The only legal requirement in California is to give employees sufficient notice which I’m sure they complied with.
She is not feeling bad about the layoff. But, after performing really well he rated her bad without consent and affected her chances for rehire.
Psychiatric treatment? Seriously? So your spouse was fine working for Amazon but needs treatment to digest no hire after layoff!!! They should have known what they were signing for. At worse case enquiry on manager and his job will be gone. This won’t change Amazon. Manager had to do this to save someone else. Also he had no control over spouse’s layoff. Did you get consent from manager before recording call? No right? You will get in trouble doing this. I would suggest chug it off. Find better company than Amazon and advise everyone not to join Amazon as it is LP shithole.
She is usually a very strong person. Not sure why she is not able to handle this situation :(
She went out in good performance ratings and was hoping to get re-hired (She obviously thought it was a great org) only to have that dream shattered. I would be pretty pissed as well by this arsehole manager move.
Consult a lawyer.. I sometimes think Amazon alone keeps the employment lawyers busy in Seattle.
And mental health professionals too
There is no law against marking someone not rehireable for any performance reason. So no sense in getting a lawyer
I’m sorry this happened. DM if you see a fit at TikTok for your spouse
