Modi is a legend, will be remembered for centuries to come
Trying to decide between two offers for PM roles: - Amazon $105/hr (around $190k-200K/yr), fully remote, 1year contract - TikTok $170k/yr base, 20% bonus, no sign-on, $45k/year in equity, hybrid, W2 Was leaning towards TT because W2 seems better than being on contract but got lowballed, so the Amazon contract role feels more competitive with greater flexiblity and possibly better WLB. I hear Amazon converts contract>W2 at a relatively high rate, but not guaranteed. Also, being W2 doesn't really seem to mean it's any safer than contract - heard that contract is just cheaper so they're not actually the first to go during layoffs. Thoughts generally & tips on negotiation? Also curious to hear about brand value Amazon vs. TikTok. current TC: 0, $165k before layoff YOE: 3.5 #product #offer #tiktok #amazon #bytedance
I considered similar: a higher-paying contract with Bank of Montreal, or regular W2 job with AWS. Given the company name next to my username, I went with AWS. I’m married with little kids, so benefits are very important. My wife stays at home with the kids, so we couldn’t use benefits from her job. Sure, 1099 shops will have things like benefits portals where you can buy your own coverage, but the cost was staggeringly expensive, like $24k/yr more than I’m paying at AWS.
The TT offer seems safer. That said, being on 1099 has some benefits. You're able to deduct contract related expenses, like office space. Being an Amazon contractor is not that bad. You focus on actual projects, which is super valuable if you're early in your career. Even if you don't get converted, you can apply to other roles at the company. You can look up the teams and what they do. This gives you a leg up over external candidates. Btw, how did you get the contract role? Which platform did you use to find it?
TT has a worse culture than Amazon?
Thanks! Yeah I’m feeling like Amazon would be more chill and didn’t even think of tax deductions. I got this from a recruiter reaching out to me on LinkedIn
With 1099 you can write off a lot, such as car, miles, equipment and more so maybe you make more money with less taxes
Amazon does 1099? Seems odd that you’re not W2 there?
I’ve never seen a 1099 employee in my org in AWS, but I’ve heard of some business units using ‘em… I assume it’s more common at Amazon than it is at AWS, but maybe that’s just my perception.
Aren’t they a contractor at that point?
