They're probably thinking big with Amazon Studios. It also will be useful to get more customer data like location and the kind of movies they like for better Ad targeting. Because this can't be just to increase physical footprint. Though I'm still trying to make sense of Amazon buying WFM because there were much better grocery chains out there which were more mainstream like Kroger's.
Yeah Movie Pass also thought they could monetize user data lol
In think they got a hard no from theaters when they want to release Amazon studio titles for theatrical release so it makes sense to say, ok, we don't need you, we can buy amc for cheap
I don’t think it will happen. Bezos owns both Prime and MGM. If he purchased the largest worldwide theater chain one could argue it was an illegal monopoly since he would own streaming, movie studio, and theaters. He could favor his studios over others given that there aren’t that many theaters chains still in business. Plus he already lost a billion dollars on the stings of Power garbage.

I haven’t heard anything about this - just saw a story about it today. Wouldn’t that cause the same vertical monopoly that caused Hollywood studios to be broken up? Oh well I guess the US doesn’t stop monopolization anymore. Why is Amazon interested in buying? They want theater chain? Want to eliminate streaming competition? Want to turn theaters into new warehouse space?
