Just got info from a friend that Amazon is not doing (yet) layoffs in Europe but US, India are being targeted. In other news, my Google recruiter was supposed to setup my onsite interview for Monday but all I get is radio silence. #Layoffs
US employees are expensive and lay off are easy
What about India then? I've seen people from Alexa team laid off
What about UK ?
UK is part of Europe
No, what about the brexit ?
Does euro have laws/practices to protect employees? That US, India dont
Yes. But layoffs can still happen
What about Canada?
Google still hiring in Europe?
I work at Alexa in UK and can confirm that this is not true - no one has been confirmed to be safe yet
Maybe you have not gotten the meeting yet. Also it is safe for now, not safe for ever.
How does your friend know about no layoffs in Europe? Stripe, Twitter, and Meta had no issues laying off thousands in Europe
To clarify: this is a safe for this week / currently. That is because Amazon is already laying off in US, Canada, India, etc.

As I read from other posts, it's hard for any company to layoff people in Europe after probation period
Layoffs are different from firing. Layoffs can be done in EU if company is in duress.
After approval of workers council which often takes a few weeks/months. Hence US and India layoffs often run in front of Europe pending the WC Approvals.
