Amazon over hired in Austin during the COVID days and there is a crazy misalignment between available desks and people in Austin. Amazon’s solution? Move everyone to “agile” seating and hope and pray not everyone comes in at the same time. I’ve heard rumors of roughly 3-1 employee to desk ratios so let’s hope not more than 1/3 of people come in. Want your own keyboard, mouse, mousepad, standing mat, notepad, pens, pencils, water bottle, headphones, headphone charger, phone charger, or something “frivolous“ like a picture of your family? Have fun packing it all up every day and fighting it out for the limited set of lockers you have to reserve! Don’t you dare leave it on a desk either or it will be confiscated! Want to sit with your team? Good luck on getting everyone there early enough to find a continuous set of desks! No more space on your floor? Go find a different floor! Amazonians are used to having to go to multiple floors to find a toilet after lunch due to having roughly 4 toilets for a floor of several hundred people after they removed the second set of bathrooms in favor of more meeting space so I guess leadership is okay with the possibility of having people go to multiple floors to find desks. Everyone up to my director has acknowledged the absurdity of the situation in Austin yet no one is doing anything about it. The lowest possible bar for return to office is having an office/desk to return to yet Amazon can’t even meet that bar. No one in leadership has stood up to the craziness from GREF and had the guts to say “No” and hold a lottery to make some teams remote and others in office but with assigned desks. Any one else’s company botched their return to office plans this bad? #givemedeskorgivemedeath #returntooffice #amazon #frugality
That’s just insane shortsightedness
I heard rumors we are building more buildings and they should be hopefully ready by 2025! Amazon clearly thinking long term here and intends to address overcrowding by waiting for new buildings to come online some day instead of simply leasing more vacant space or keeping a small portion of employees remote! Why make a small portion of employees happy with continued remote work when you can make everyone unhappy by forcing return to overcrowded offices with no desk guarantees!
No, it's deliberate forcing of cheap attrition.
The word Agile has destroyed life's of people in more than 1 ways.
Agile = We have a shitty process and need to name it!😂
Please bring this up in our next Retro so we can avoid it in upcoming PIs
Maaam this is IBM
IBM has a ton of space. Perhaps Amazon employees can go use the desks there!
JPMC did this in 2015 when they moved to their headquarters
This is happening in nyc too. It's called "agile seating" but each team is assigned a zone of roughly 2 rows each. Not sure what's agile about this apart from the fact that they do not have to account for 1 desk per person
Lucky you are getting zones! We are only told floors. We are trying to carve out/establish a zone of desks but leadership is not allowing us to formally stake out an aisle and we’ve been told to not leave things on desks.
Isn't that how agile seating is supposed to work, at least works like this in most other organizations. You cannot say agile and pin everyone down to 2 rows of seats
wtf!
Come to Seattle. We have lots of extra desks.
Is this real? Crazy work stories aside, I can't imagine Amazon with such a bad office experience
Yes it’s real unfortunately. Out of space in Austin but s-team won’t budge on RTO so IC’s left to suffer. Don’t worry though! L7+’s still get assigned desks in their offices!
Leadership in tech companies should be replaced by 5th graders.
