I got offers from Amazon Austin($230k for L5) and Google Bay Area($280k avg, 320k first year for L4) and I am a bit confused in choosing between two. I heard very bad stories about Amazon toxic culture on Blind but I do hear that Google Cloud org has also same issues. I spoke to both HMs and I liked the Amazon HM as he is very patient and answered all my questions while Google HM mostly gave one-word answers. Any thoughts between amazon and google? YOE:6 PS: I got a taste of toxic Amazon Culture during post-interview process but don't want to lose out the opportunity of working under good HM. #amazon #google Edit: Asked Recruiter for Austin location but there are no open roles for L4 in Austin
Cost of living in Texas is much lower than Cali, so Amzn offer is worth more
Amazon offer worth more but Google brand name, perks way better. So it depends what do you want?
What perks? Free food? It’s like $10/day after tax, 220 work days a year. So $2200/year after tax. Which equates to roughly 4-5 grand in salary.
Google does also have much better benefits. (Health insurance, maternity/paternity leave, etc.) I think Amazon in Austin is probably the better financial deal here, though, because of Austin vs BA.
I'd have picked google. More opportunities later in the career based on brand name and location. What's your yoe and offer breakdown?
Role ?
I would pick Austin. Is it possible to work for Google Austin?
To my knowledge Austin has zero headcount for SWEs ever since COVID. I do think you could probably take a Bay Area job, never move, and hope that they will let you work remote or from Austin whenever people are finally going back to offices.
Recruiter said that Google Austin is very small team and there is no requirement for L4 roles
If you have kids, Amazon due to high COL in the Bay Area
Go to google stay there for a year and then look for other job in Austin
If no kids, I'd probably go Google. Better culture, still a bit better brand name, etc. You can relocate not a lower COL place later if desired. If you have kids, I'd do Amazon because $230k in Austin will make it much easier to manage that.
You don’t know how your teammates or manager’s manager is going to me at Amazon. Google is a safer bet culture wise. As for financially, Austin. Depends on what you want.
Is Manager's manager that important? In my current role, I barely talk to my Director
230k in Austin will go way farther than 280k in the Bay Area FWIW
