If I understand correctly bar raisers have the ability to veto a hiring manager / interview panel's decision, right? I'm curious for any Amazon hiring managers (or hiring managers at a company with a similar process) what % of the time have you been vetoed?
If a bar raiser is having to use the veto, they failed in their job of convincing the hiring manager otherwise. It rarely/never happens.
I was a BR, out of hundreds of interviews I only vetoed once. If you are a good BR, it hardly ever happens….
I’ve seen it happen once
BR rarely if ever vetoes on their own. However, I've been a single engineer in a debrief with all others inclined, and swayed the BR to veto the hire. Usually 1-2 people not willing to change to an inclined will force the BRs hand, as the final votes are the HM and the BR.
Only saw it happen once
I was a BR. Only once over 500+ interviews did I use veto. The HM had a poor explanation for why they didn’t want the candidate despite evidence. Something like didn’t code fast enough or something. Which is pretty immature way of evaluating a candidate because at job you are not doing a timed programming contest. We ended up hiring the candidate but for another team under the same Director. This engineer is now a L6
That seems to be an inappropriate reason. There are plenty of valid health reasons someone might appear/seem that way. Plenty of other people seemed to have found the candidate to meet the bar.
