Currently working as ML Engineer at Uber India. Have got verbal offer as Applied Scientist at Amazon (no numbers yet). The team (part of Alexa) is split across Cambridge office in UK and Aachen office in Germany. Which office would be better for an Indian immigrant looking to settle long term? Compare in terms of TC, savings, QoL, settling long term and long term tech opportunities. Current TC: YOE - 1.5, TC - 32LPA

What’s your TC at Cambridge and Aachen? TBH, surprised that Amazon opened office in Aachen but makes sense to have it lcol area with biggest engineering university in Germany. Aachen pros: One of the lcol areas in Germany. Strategically located next to Belgium and Netherlands. Basically, you can cross countries by walking from there. You’d save a lot of money. Being in schengen area, you can travel pretty much other European easily. This is a huge advantage compared to UK. Aachen cons: Not the most happening place as it’s a small university city. Personally, as an expat I was not a fan of Germany. They are not racist but very organized. If you’re very self disciplined, you would like Germany. Of course, if your Amazon team is laid back, then it doesn’t matter at all. PS: For longer term, I wouldn’t recommend Germany. See if you can get positions in NL. People are much laid back and take wlb seriously.
Thanks for the response. I was looking for these insights. 1. I don't have the numbers yet. 2. Won't it be possible to get multi entry Schengen visa separately and use it to travel to Europe through the UK? 3. How high should I weigh learning a new language against the Aachen office? 4. Do you know how the work culture is in the UK?
1. Okay 2. No. You might get schengen only for 6 months max I guess. So much things to see in Europe. I wouldn’t recommend UK for that. So think of any country in mainland Europe. Germany wouldn’t be the best place to go longer term. You can survive in Aachen with very little German. For longer run, I would recommend Netherlands hands-down. 3. Little bit of German is needed/recommended. Aachen office wouldn’t need German language but public places like supermarkets etc need German knowledge. Basics like numbers, etc. A1 level I would suggest. 4. No idea about UK. I’ll send you a DM.
