Amazon has offered me and a couple of people I know a higher TC and a wanted relocation and yet nobody I know took the offer. and everyone I know is now excluding amazon when applying.. did amazon really fuxx up their reputation that much? are they still getting good talents?
Amazon appeals to two kinds of people: people who have something to prove, and people who want impact early. From my experience at Amazon, it's very sink or swim and a reputation based culture. If you're known to get things done and kickass, managers will keep giving you opportunities and more important roles. If you fuck up, you're stuck in ops hell. This style doesn't appeal to everyonr
Wrong. Amazon appeals to people who can’t get into better companies
And then some lucky ones like me who got rejected and got into some decent pay master with amazing WLB.
I kick ass but Amazon can kiss my ass.
Why would you interview for Amazon if you didn’t want the job
I do it for two reasons: - for practice - to keep an eye on where the market, my experience/resume and skillset are I do not interview with every company I get a recruiter contacting me from, but I believe I answer to more than 50% of them. In general I interview for roles above my current one and definitely I do not get an offer from every interview process. Whenever I fail an interview I learn something new about myself. Whenever I get an offer I learn more about where the market is. Actually my interview with Amazon originally was just for practice but I liked the team and what was proposed to me. I had been 3 years here and, although I still enjoy it, lately I had been interviewing more outside looking for a different culture.
I’m very happy that other people are turned down for opportunities they need because there are people like you out there who just want “practice” /s
I've excluded Amazon from my applying. Maybe I should just for competitive offers, but I wouldn't want another company to call my bluff on negotiations and then I end up at Amazon or my current job.
Amazon has a reputation? For what exactly..
🍌
I feel that, yes, Amazon reputation is causing waves in the talent pool. There is a big number of people that simply would never accept and offer from Amazon or even accept to interview. From what I had seen on new hires in my org, talented people are still being found and recruited. I believe this is because Amazon throws a wider net than most other companies and also because it is more willing to risk a bad hire than other companies. Hire fast and fire fast. I had been in interview panels where a single interviewer is inclined and, after the deliberation if that interviewer was convincing, the panel agrees to take the risk and hire the candidate. There lots of people who are great engineers who just sock at interviews. I assume that levels out the bad reputation and, for now, allows Amazon to hire great people. Will that change? I assume yes and I have heard that that is something that the leadership had been debating for a while.
That’s super weird. When I was there quite a few years ago it was very much the opposite. Even piddly things got folks excluded from consideration. I found it infuriating. That said, I hated the culture (wasn’t terrible hours but it seemed to encourage conflict and asshole behavior) and left as soon as I could.
Wow. Do you really know how world works. Amazon is doing good. Stock is doing good. Bezos is getting rich. He gives 2 banana on what you think of its reputation. There always more people lining up to get the job you so sheepishly claim you kicked away. It's like you want to invent a game and win it against Bezos while he does not even know you.
I don't care or even think about Bezos. I care about my job security and peace of mind
you're just one cog in the wheel at Amazon working to get Bezos rich. Amazon pays shit, I interviewed there and thier base was horrible compared to other offers I got.
True . I have started looking out and giving interviews outside but never replied to any amazon recruiters or managers ( get their pings every week) . Because not interested to join amazon unless something happens when i become desperate to leave and can't get any offers. I know we can get 100k extra minimum at Amazon but due to bad reputation i am preferring Peace of mind than this extra 100+k..
100k brings a lot of peace of mind lol But other than that, I've been at Amazon 3 yrs now and I absolutely love my team and my work. I've learned more and been challenged here than I have in the last 10 yrs. I've also seen at least 1 pip a year - but I unfortunately believe they were deserved PIPs as its relative to the rest of the team. Yes, if it was another company (I've worked in government and at other big corporate techs) those people would probably still be there. But Amazon's bar is tough, and many people can't meet it. The problem is Amazon is scaling and diversifying in tech so much, so fast, we have to by necessity hire fast and since it's impossible to judge anyone's talent in a 1 hour interview, plenty of ppl get in who won't last/fit here in the long run.
Well if amazon is so good that's what op's post is about, how come reputation is so bad? I'm not here to debate with you but apparently as per replies and posts above there are people out there who thinks like this . If you don't accept the problem then fine.
It's tough to convince people from other big companies (FAANG, M$, unicorns) but there's still a ton of talent in smaller startups. It's more of a needle in a haystack situation but they're out there. We still offer more than most startups and non FAANG so people still come to the dark side and play PIP roulette.
people forget the shitton of random little software companies in the world. leave the bay area/pnw and the tech scene looks a lot different
