Hey I am recently considering internal transfer and have been talking to a couple of HMs. Three of them seem nice. But I understand a person can be nice but a terrible boss. How do I know for sure they are a good boss since they can basically determine your career and, in a large part, happiness. Is there any sign I need to look for or person I can talk to cautiously? Thanks fellow amazonians.
talk to current and former reports
First check: how many directs have been promoted in last 1-2 years?
How can I check this info?
Ask around - people in that team, partner teams.
1. Check the team's CR stats, if most of them work on weekends, boss is not good. 2. Check avg duration of people in the team. And also see if people are getting promoted. 3. Take reviews from different people in the team. 4. Talk to him/her about your future plans and how their org will help you with that.
Sounds useful, How would you check a history of manager's direct reports getting promoted?
Ask for connections scores
1. Check Tech Survey results. 2. Tell them you have 3 offers but you are interested in joining them because you liked the work and conversation with them. And you expect best for your career and team. See their reactions. 3. Investigate activities of his team. 4. Talk to at least 2 of his reports without letting him know.
Where can I find the tech survey results?

a bunch of people are probably typing "check the tech survey results for the team", but unfortunately participation in the last tech survey was just 30% so it's not super useful. imo: talk to their reports, especially at lower levels.
