YOE: 3 w/ phd TC: 370k @ Seattle Hi. I think I stayed long enough for Amazon. Work blocked from inherent org issues and don’t think this would be resolved in foreseeable future. As I can’t deliver impactful stuff because of this, don’t think I’m in a good position to ask my manager for promo. At this moment, maybe boomerang back when this is resolved is the best option I have unless I sacrifice my career. Seeing different options, wondering how you folks think about on the following postings: 1. MSR Senior DS : Would DS 2nd tier citizens even though I have phd? 2. MSFT Applied Scientist : What level should I target if I want to get at least slight TC increase? I don’t expect huge increase because it is MSFT. 3. G SWE3 Remote: would remote position has some TC cut? How does it work if I want to work onsite either on Kirkland or Seattle office? 4. AAPL Sr. MLE: what would be reasonable TC people usually target? 5. FB Applied Research Scientist: what would be reasonable TC people usually target? Also, any suggestion for company I can use for TC negotiation would be really appreciated. I heard companies usually doesn’t match Bytedance offers. Forgot to ask, which company should I contact first if I want to align offers around similar time? Thank you! + I’m going to apply those positions with referrals so I’m expecting reasonable response time from recruiters
In same spot. 2.5 yoe
How’s your wlb?
Decent
What is your PhD in?
Non-CS but heavy signal processing+ML. That’s what I’ve been doing at Amazon.
I'm a DS at Google, Stat Phd + 3 YOE, was your interview process hard? I was wondering if L5/L6 AS at Amazon was attainable with my background
Return offer from intern so don’t really have details as interviewee. As an interviewer, not really hard LC but domain-specific ML depth and breadth. Not really sure what DS role in G actually do so hard to tell. For the actual job, expect to code the model you will train and finetune based on requirements come from leadership. Can you share what DS in Google do? And your loc, level, and TC if you don’t mind?
L4 DS, TC $350k, Seattle. Google DS is mainly a/b testing, product analytics, business metrics stuff (although interview is heavy stats material). Ads teams are generally better bc you get to produce your own models, test them in prod, and own your work , but my teams have been complete snoozers. I've interviewed for senior AS before, and keep passing the tech bar, but get down leveled probably due to my shitty LPs :(
At Microsoft, you have to look at the job description to find if it's more like Amazon DS or AS - we use the titles pretty interchangeably. I don't know what current offers are, but you probably want senior. You can't see if it's 63 or 64, and they can adjust that anyway. Most fresh PhD are hired at 61/62; 64 at phd+3 would be attainable but very fast. I don't know much about msr
Also one thing to keep in mind - referrals don't work well at Microsoft. Generally more effective to get in with a recruiter.
I kinda felt that too earlier unless the one referring really go the extra mile, like contacting HR etc.. thank you for the advice!
If you get L6 promo here the band is pretty high so you’ll get more comp than these other options
I know. But too many human factor on my end so not sure when it would be honestly
