Joined Amazon as L5 about 10 months back. Is there an expectation that you have to be in L5 for a certain amount of time before you can be promoted to L6? What would be the compensation improvement when you move from L5 to L6? Yoe: 12 Tc: 200k Edit: Location Seattle
No timeframe per se but you need to provide data points that you are consistently performing at that level Hike depends on role. They will try to put you in beginning of L6 band. If you r already there you won't get much hike
What does beginning of L6 mean? Are there sub-bands like L6a etc? For example at Msft, we have 61 and 62 in SDE 2
I don't know the answer if there are sub bands. What I know is high of L5 over laps with low of L6. So some ppl don't get much of hike after promo
Perhaps your manager can answer this?
True but wanted other insights, especially on compensation.
No hard timeline. I've seen 10-year-running L5s. For promo, you should be performing at the next level, in your case L6, consistently for at least 6 months. So if you have data and feedback (from several L7+) showing as much, and importantly, your manager likes you, then you have a real shot.
Makes sense. Thank you.
Ask your manager, but it looks like you are on the lower end of L5, so realistically you are 1.5-2 years away minimum. The promo docs require a lot of data, usually requires 1-1.5 years of consistent top performance.
How can you tell i am on lower end of L5? Based on compensation? I am Data Engineer, if that matters.
Ah disregard that then, was assuming SDE.
In my org it is 1 minimum. The promo process sucks as you need to work your ass off for it.
What role?
Data Engineer
