I work as an SDE 2 in Amazon India, happy with my role here. I had plans to relocate to Seattle in next few months...That was before I got the Google hiring committee approval. Now I am really confused :) !! I'd like to get an opinion on the Google offer since it's L3. Is it really worth taking a down level? Current TC - INR 35 LPA. YOE - 3 years, all at Amazon. Got promoted last year Q3. Short term goal (next 2 years) Move to the US and earn some 🤑💲 Google TC - INR 50 LPA
Go for Google. You can relocate with Google as well.
Google is cutting down big time on relocation as Bangalore office is expanding . This is just downlevel to L3 and you will be doing work which a fresh grad is doing and promo will take another 1-2 years . TC wise also this doesn't make sense. Average SDE2 pay is much above what Google L3 can offer (50+ is not very difficult )
Doesn't align with my short term goals. Updated the post to highlight the same. I'd like to keep the discussion and comparison limited to Amazon and Google
I will give you a friendly advice - don’t day trade your career. Think long term. Optimizing just for short term money is a rookie mistake.
Short term optimization is not just for money. I have a personal situation that requires the kind of money that only 💲could pay off. That being said, I am happy with Amazon and moving to Seattle was anyway the next step for me. I do agree that I shouldn't take career decisions based on short term goals. I am just trying to evaluate it from a career perspective as well. I don't want to join start ups / smaller sized companies right now.
Go for Google. It’s in ultra growth phase in India. You will get promoted quicker than being in the US. You can move once you’re happy with your level.
You will not earn more money in the USA (especially if you settle here). Go to Canada or Australia for a better future
This is not true. You save the most in the US because the earning/spending ratio is the highest compared to any place in the world.
Read again. If he plans to settle here, he can virtually forget citizenship. He will be in a permanent limbo and cannot make "settle" worthy decisions like buying a house
Keeping in mind that Amazon is the easiest place to relocate from India to US. Not every company easily sends you.
Easier than Google? (New grad deciding between Amazon Dublin and Google India)
Off topic How was the interview at Google? How many rounds and difficulty level?
5 rounds. LC medium-hard
This is just an outright downlevel . Google will just match/beat your TC and with a very low base (around 18L). Average time for promo is 2 years and it will take you another one to two years for becoming L4 . Relocation will be tricky as Google is expanding in Bangalore and there are lots of cost cutting measures going on . That said if it is your dream to work at Google you should take it .
It definitely is a dream, but I can't base my decision solely on that. I don't have TC from Google yet so I can't really comment on it.
Google’s levels are different. L3 isnt downleveling for a L5 SDE. Check levels.fyi. I am a L6 at amazon. Would choose google over amazon anyday.
Levels.fyi maps Amazon L4 to Google L3. Looks like a downlevel to me!
@nomad9876 did you even have a look at levels.fyi before putting it. Amazon L5 perfectly maps to Google L4. Op has been L5 for around an year .People like you are the reason Google feels it can lowball candidates and people will still join
You've been lowballed by Amazon. Base is usually 35lpa for Amazon sde 2
I joined as a college fresher. Amazon comp is inline with what others got after promo
Yeah, I get that external hires usually get 35 base. Also I suggest you stay for a year as your full share vesting time is 4 years. You can talk to Google after a few months or a year when you can make a clear decision.
