Hi everyone! Wanted to pose this question as I am going to have to make some tough decisions soon, I am currently at Cisco as G6 I passed both the Amazon L5 and Google L3 interviews (Hiring committee too) and currently in team matching for both, I have seen a similar post to this and wanted to see if people had an opinion either way. Amazon will require me to relocate but is offering me around 250k will some possibility to go higher (not sure how high but will update) Google will be right down the street to me but is a lower level (L3) so I don’t think they will come close to matching (probably not even 200k, closer to 170k maybe 180k due to the location) I heard that the environment at Amazon is stressful but you learn a lot, while at Google a lot of people have a tendency to coast, Honestly neither really sound great to me as I want to learn a lot due to me being early in career but not be killed and overwhelmed all of the time. I really enjoy a challenge and can do well in a sink or swim environment, but also feel like I should establish some kind of work life balance at some point to not burn out quickly. Reason why I am trying to do my research now is because Amazon said that if I do get that higher number I’m asking for, then I will only have a couple days to decide. Not moving is a major factor as I have roots in current location (Google). Should I go after the sink or swim environment + higher TC at Amazon + relocate or Google with potential if not learning as much but not have to uproot my life with lower TC? Also please give me thoughts if what I am saying is even accurate just reacting to what I’ve been seeing on here and quora. Will edit once I match and get the actual numbers Edit: YOE 1 year as FTE, 1 year as Intern Current TC 125k #engineering #swe engineering #software
I’d go with G any day of the week that ends with Y. What’s your current TC? That might help with your decision.
Why not interview at FB and join as an E4 instead?
Lol not a bad idea, honestly wasn’t expecting either one, thought that fb was way out of my reach
I’d take the Amazon offer dude to the relatively high delta and learning opp. If it’s not for you, I assume G would be pretty easy to get back to since you passed everything already. I’m a PMT for AWS and was pleasantly surprised when I joined. Obviously it’s team dependent, but definitely feel like SWE get a ton of ownership.. for better or worse 😂 from a WLB side.
I’d try to get close to $200k with google then take google. That amazon offer gives you a lot of leverage
Thanks that’s good advice, hoping that is possible because that would make my decision a lot easier
Google and it’s not even close
Why do you say that? Bad environment at Amazon?
It’s as bad as blind makes it out to be Don’t let the new hires trick you, things will change even if your team is good. Turnover is high And would be easy to get the amazon offer again if Google isn’t a good fit.
If I were you I’d pick Google. Amazon culture is OK. It’s definitely tough, but not as bad as Blind makes it out to be. Even with that said I would go Google.
Can you get an up-level interview at G? Or get them to come close to matching TC? G has lots of room if you want to work hard, but promos still may be slower than other places.
They didn’t mention it as a possibility, I did do well on the System design interview for Amazon so few pretty confident that I can do well for one at Google, would L4 require an additional algo interview?
I’m also thinking my YOE might be holding me back there
Hiring SDE2 in Bay Area at Amazon. DM me if interested.
Thank you so much but unfortunately my fiancé is not onboard for Bay Area, something I floated early on
How many YOE? Which amzn team? How hard are you on not moving? I would select based on location and the team. AmZn is not too bad, all depends on team and jumping teams is very easy. You can ride your luck and smooch as much knowledge you can. G is not good for career just makes you lazy ass Dm if you want more info about amzn
Yeah I figured that Amazon experiences are probably skewed negative on here, I do well in sink or swim environments, I have Nashville and Colorado on the table with Device team and then Amazon payments team which I will be meeting soon
I am also v self motivated so I may be able to get over not being pushed as much at Google, I just don’t want to put in 80 hour weeks and then still get piped as only having 1 YOE
YOE? voting for G if still pretty early in career
around 1 year as intern and then 1 year as FTE, I got a lot of experience because I did them consecutively and my work as an intern essentially was exactly like FTE work
you should go to Google 1YOE isn't even much
