Considering an offer from Amazon (AWS) for a Sr PM role. I'm trying to negotiate the salary, but, it seems I have hit the cap of what they offer for a L6 PM. I come from a technical background and the recruiter said that if I can demonstrate technical skills, I can make a case to switch over to a PM-T role easily once I join. How accurate is that? Is it easy to change? Also, I hear that there will be a TC increase. Any body have an idea on how much the change would be? Is it negotiable when moving roles within the company? Thanks in advance! #amazonaws #amazonpm
PM to PMT switch really depends. For me, L6 PM, it was super easy. I just provided documentation on all the architecture and security reviews I was leading and writing about. Sent it to my L7 and L8. In a few weeks, I was a PMT. No diff to TC, due to stock appreciation. Question for you: What’s you offer? Provide the breakdown. And do you have competing offers?
I do not have competing offers. TC being offered is 270K, which is similar to what I make at MS. The opportunity sounds good, which is my reason for making the move. The manager wanted to get me in as a PM-T but had to bring me in as a PM. He said we should be able to get the title switched once I'm settled in, but wondering if that would come with a pay bump, especially as I'm not getting any with this switch
Honestly, I doubt it. Doesn’t hurt to ask him now, but you’re at a high comp level, so possibly maxing out the L6 range. FWIW, I joined at 230k as a PM, 3 years ago.
I thought new hire cannot switch/transfer until they complete a year in their hired role and level
Not easy to switch. I’m a sr program manager and run all my own data and code, lead meetings with tech teams, help scope solutions, etc.. It’s not clear as I have met TPMs who don’t do much and then there’s folks like me running multiple programs and driving tech solutions
PgM and PM are not the same..., and TPM is not PMT. There are definitely cases of people switching from PM to PMT.
So what would you consider my role if I’m driving solutions with tech teams and doing my own code and data pulls
