Does Amazon/AWS takes Leadership Principles seriously in their work culture or its just a BS in the interview?
Evaluations revolve around LPs
Which is funny because the company defies them in 10,000 different ways every single day.
Which is by design. Earn Trust (with your management) is the only LP that really matters, and it's totally subjective in some managers eyes. Insight on the Highest Standards with a Bias for Action. Think Big on your ownership, now disagree and commit to Deliver Results Learn and be curious so long as you're right a lot Make sure you're frugal in your customer obsession If they want to be the world's greatest employer, Amazon has a bunch to do before (re) earning my trust.
The lps are used to find excuses to pip you.
I wish those were just interview BS 😫
I know what you mean, once you join Amazon your life is like loop interview, 😉
I worked at Amazon for several years, and LPs are a big part of the culture, for better or worse. The good: common language and framework for evaluating something or making a decision. The bad: often used as a cudgel to shut down a discussion and turn something nuanced into a black and white decision. The ugly: frupidity, frupidity everywhere!
It’s cringeworthy BS. Leadership tries to use the LPs in every conversation or email or All hands. There are several folks who drink the coolaid and mouth those LPS even in normal meeting conversations between colleagues even when management is not there in that meeting. Too cringey. They use the LPs for forte 360 feedback and promo docs as well. It is tough to force oneself to write platitudes of folks confirming to the LPs. Some of the LPs are so obscure and don’t even make sense. The loop interviews are the worst wherein they force the interviewers to look at it with some stupid LP lens. There have been so many candidates who were really good but lost out because their answers didnt conform to the LP being measured and so many others who were sheer nonsense folks who got in as they gamed it well to answer suiting the BS LPs. Sheer BS as Amazon builds a cult out of everyone from top to bottom.
I had to break the 4th wall on lps when I was conducting interviews @ Amazon. "Okay, now could you phrase that in a way that demonstrates competence in this leadership principle, or give me another story which does?" I hated the song and dance and preferred to just directly ask the candidates. They either have a story or not, I hated playing 20 questions to tease it out of them.
They're taken very seriously. For example, if you follow the LP "disagree and commit" against your manager or higher ups, they'll immediately put you on PIP, and will manage you out soon after. So LPs are serious business, and should be avoided at all times to keep being employed
What do you think based on their PIP culture and recent layoffs? 😄
Short Answer - Complete BS Strive to be Earth's Best Employer With AWS outstanding holiday schedule of 7 days. Used to be 6 but they kick in one extra holiday to be politically correct. Secret Dev plan to create that fun environment where you are always looking over your back and many employees backstab each other. If employee asks if they are on a Dev plan do not tell them. That clearly is a fair way to treat your employees. PIP - Without any notice move you to PIP from secret Dev plan. Create unattainable tasks while making your employee work like slaves. Lets not forget about the large offering of 2 weeks of vacation (first year). While at AWS I took off Fridays so that I could work on projects on Saturdays. So really not even two weeks of vacation. Constantly overwork employees so that they have no life outside of work. Leaders work every day to create a safer, more productive, higher performing, more diverse, and more just work environment. They lead with empathy, have fun at work, and make it easy for others to have fun. Leaders ask themselves: Are my fellow employees growing? Are they empowered? Are they ready for what's next? Leaders have a vision for and commitment to their employees' personal success, whether that be at Amazon or elsewhere
