Amazon London vs Uber India

Help me evaluate both offers. Also, I want to move outside India. Is there any way I can use my existing interview results from Uber to apply for open roles in Amsterdam? Also how is the work culture at both these companies? Amazon London (L5 - SDE II): 145k GBP => 183k USD Uber India (L5A - Senior SDE): 1.1 cr INR => 130k USD ~6 YOE Could you also please add a comment explaining your choice? TIA #uber #amazon

If you want to move out of India then it’s a no brainer. Take the Amazon role. It’s a good offer as well. You can switch easily later if you want to move to a different company.

That's true. It's just Uber's offer is too good to decline so in a dilemma here. Also don't want to take a major hit on the compensation.

Again you need to decide if you want to chase TC or move while you can. I always wanted to move abroad but I declined an offer 2 years back and never got another opportunity again. So if that’s your goal, then take the opportunity when it’s there.

Cost of living is extremely high. Uber is better, can go for trips anytime to those locations.

One of the reason I want to move out of India is the work culture and WLB. I'm not sure if it's that bad outside or not but I have heard from few of my friends that it's better than India, especially in Europe.

Salesforce nACt38 Mar 5

Only if you live outside of India you will know what you really want - stay in India or abroad. Take the Amazon offer roam around Europe.. then come back to India if you want may be when you start a family.. raising family in Europe is expensive

I work in Dublin. Trust me when I say Uber offer is miles better if you're after pay tax is like over 5L per month. In UK, half or even more of your salary gets taxed above a certain threshold. Yeah you could save a bit but it's not worth it moving far from friends and family. I plan to come back to India for these reasons. Just another PoV to look at these things.

Have you worked in India before? How was the WLB in Dublin? Also friends and family is not a concern for me rn as almost all my friends are in US and I have got time to explore as of now which might not be the scene 5 years down the line from family perspective.

Amazon Urano Mar 5

Yes, I have worked in India before and had it been a different company than Amazon, I might have been more inclined towards Europe for a better WLB. Amazon has the same culture almost everywhere with minor differences though so I don't think you'd get much better. I'll give a very brief example: Let's say you are sick in India. In most places as SWE, you are encouraged more to work rather than get a holiday unless it's bad. In Europe, they'd force you that please take sick leave and get better even for most minor things.. While it does seem a nicer thing, the problem is Amazon has very strict deadline which doesn't account for sick leave of a day or two in b/w.

System design interviews are mostly surface level and you can clear most of them from youtube videos but if you want to grow technically then DDIA & read alot of whitepapers and engineering blogs

Amazon Urano Mar 10

Which YouTube videos do you suggest? Something particular or following Primer?

It's not that easy to find jobs abroad now. If you got this, take it. Did you just directly apply on the amazon website?

Better lifestyle: go to London. Try to switch to Meta E5 if you want more money. You can also go with BB or JPMC London if you want to go hard on travel & partying with less work. Want more savings & if you’re too desi: Uber India London life: very eventful if you’re are outgoing. Lots of Indians working for meta amazon bb. Lots of holidays and europe travel India life: weddings, road trips, better/ easier dating , some travel to SEA

CRED shinchan_ Mar 12

How does the work-life balance and work culture compare to that in India? I understand it's team-dependent, but if there are organizational differences, they could also influence individual teams. Also European laws are strict and employee friendly as compared to India. So any insight on that?

Meta nomaD__ Mar 17

At Amazon, wlb in UK is probably similar to India. At Meta, it’s a bit worse but people you with are more competent. BB has pretty good wlb. Probably JPM as well. These pay similar to amazon.
