Amazon Offer

I got offer from Amazon for Senior DevOps Engineer in Seattle, WA. Recruiter asked me to give my compensation expectations, what do you think would be the range for this role (considering the cost of living index as well)? Current: 9YoE, Austin, TX

What's your current TC ?

DXC Technology #!: OP Jul 28, 2018

Am I supposed to reveal that to Recruiter?

Facebook HKyoma Jul 28, 2018

Nope, just us. To get a better idea of what the minimum Amazon should offer is.

Ask him what level they consider for you. How was an interview? Besides ops questions, coding was leetcode like?

Wait. The recruiter asked for compensation expectations after you got the offer? Does that mean you are negotiating at this point?

DXC Technology #!: OP Jul 28, 2018

Recruiter mentioned that they wanted to make an offer. So asked me send an email with my expectations so she can discuss with Hiring Manager and send out an offer.

I think it’s great idea to know your TC expectations but not share it with a recruiter. Ask them what’s the range for an employee with your level of experience and abilities. If you feel compelled to share, get ideas from places like Glassdoor and nudge those numbers to match your expectations. Good luck!

I usually do current TC + 20% + bonuses. However my Amazon offer was like TC - 75% for SDE3 cause they "don't value private equity". Such a joke.

DXC Technology #!: OP Jul 28, 2018

20% is just going to match with cost of living in Seattle vs Austin; then it would be just apparent rise, I don’t see a benefit.

Amazon OTdS88 Jul 28, 2018

Why not reinterview for a spot in Austin? Unless you really like rain

Throwing a number first is a lose-lose situation for you. Let them throw a number first. Do you research online and see how they usually pay for the position, and ask for top tier range.

DXC Technology #!: OP Jul 28, 2018

I agree, but I was told to send my numbers first and they wanted to take it from there. I’m doing that here now, so asking folks what should be a good range for this role.

Doesn’t mean you should. Same if they had asked you to tell them your current compensation. Find a polite way to have them name a number first.

500k tc

Facebook kevgill Jul 28, 2018

Not trolling. Go high make the recruiter bring you down. Plus right now devops engineers are gold. You can demand more than swe because there is 0 supply in comparison to the demand. Then go use that information at Amazon to create a career of driving down other companies aws costs. You are set for life.

We engineers tend to be humble and ask for less than what we deserve. Recruiters being practiced negotiators tend to fight for a much smaller number than the one we asked for. So play it safe by asking for more initially. If you want $X, ask for $(X*1.2) . You need not provide the breakdown into base, bonus and stock components. If your interview went well, they will offer you $(0.9*X). Then you ask for 1.1*X and finally settle on 1.05*X. Since the stock has gone up so high recently, focus on getting more cash. If you like the future prospects of the stock, then you can just buy it in the open market.

Could you please update when you get the numbers I want to know as well? Yoe?

Amazon piora Jul 28, 2018

At Amazon you have to focus on what is internal level you going to have and how much stock you will get. If you can go for lower base salary and more stock - do it.

Gilead Sciences HeadingOut Jul 28, 2018

Did you find out what level is this?

DXC Technology #!: OP Jul 28, 2018

Nope; better I’ll get that answered before giving my numbers. I believe it to be L5.

Facebook HKyoma Jul 28, 2018

L5 is not senior, L6 is.
