Hi guys, I gave an interview for sde2 in the Bay Area. Recruiter came back saying we can only offer sde1 and currently the team I interviewed for, does not have any open positions. The recruiter mentioned that they have sent out my application to multiple hiring managers and as soon as they hear back, they would reach out to me. They said that the application is valid for upto 6 months. If and when I get some offer from some hiring manager, do you guys think it’s worth taking it up? #offer #tech Tc 190k YOE: 2.25 yrs

What’s the tc they offered?
Nothing offered so far since team matching is left
It will be same as his current tc for that level
Yeah no
Don’t do it, you will regret it you accept this.
Honestly - I have met very few people who are external hire sde2 level after 2.5 yoe Your still a junior And as external hire for a level need to prove your better then 50% that are at that level. Either wait more or take the downlevel. Tc would be about what you make today at Walmart where you prob are considered higher level
I saw many internal Amazon got promoted to sde2 after 1 year. Can they prove better than 50% of the next level?
Internal promotions have to just meet the bar...external ones have to be better than 50%
Is YOE the main factor (assuming you do well on LPs and sys design)? I’m currently interviewing for SDE2 with 3 YOE exactly, but if I’ll be downleveled to L4, there’s no chance I’ll accept the offer.
Get ready 😂 most likely you will Hoping for you that you won’t You’ll need to have really solid understanding beyond just solving the questions - about asking the correct questions , making suggestions , explaining - on top of proving impact and meaningful situations
hmm ok. Well my onsite rounds were split between 2 days, and I still have 1 day left. I’ll keep that in mind for the remainder.
You’re not downleveled
Seriously, these fucking kids thinking 2.25 years in industry means you're mid-level, what the hell are you smoking? SDE2 means you have nontrivial experience. That doesn't happen in 2 years. I work with L5 with 8 to 12 years in industry, not underperformers, not struggling with growth. Yes, this is mostly because they were unfairly downleveled from SDE3 and don't get promoted because the process is bullshit, but it's also part of the reality of what L5 in Amazon means in practice.
I mean most people reach l5 in two years so.... I've even seen external l5 hire with 1.5 years experience
No, decline and protect the market of these lowballers
Facts
As far as I know SDE2 max is 300k in the Bay Area. You’re more likely to get 250-270k, which several of my colleagues did when going to Amazon, after only 2 YOE.
My friend experienced the same; interviewed for sde2, gave sde1; team said no openings, then similar shit and gave offer in Nashville. Looks like a plan to me, they must not be getting candidates for Nashville and doing this to get some desperate candidates, so they can fill up the Nashville location. If you are good, just hold on; Nashville is not worth it.
They gave me an offer for Austin if I wanted it right away. For Bay Area, I would have to wait until the recruiter comes back to me.
@superX lucky you, Austin is a way better place to live. I would take it
If this is for Amazon, I would turn it down. At 2.25 years, you should be able to get an Amazon L5 offer. Try waiting for 6m and working on your leadership principles and design rounds.
You don't get SDE-2 till 3 YOE for 90% cases. Even internally it takes 3 years in most teams to be SDE-2
Do you have evidence for that claim?
