I have been having some discussions regarding the data engineer L5 position which has been offered to me by @amazon. I wanted to discuss if the offer looks considerable by reviewing all the aspects and not just the salary when compared to my current company @expedia YOE: 6 Position: Expedia: Data Engineer 3 Amazon: Data Engineer 2 Compensation Grade: Expedia: L Amazon: L5 Compensation: Expedia: 32.6 LPA plus 20 L stocks spread across 4 years Amazon: 27.5 LPA base + (20+16 L joining bonus for 1st and 2nd year) and 20 shares worth 49 L based on the current price spread across 4 years. HR said it is the final offer. Appraisals: Expedia: Bonus is now removed and appraisals would be based on base pay and equity. A good year would generate a 15% hike plus equity Amazon: Not sure about this but read a few reviews on glassdoor and blind saying 8 to 12% increase and equity Location: Expedia: Gurgaon, India Amazon: Bangalore, India (have to move) Benefits: Current: 30 Leaves, 10 Sick leaves, other types, free food, health insurance, etc Offered: 15 leaves, 12 sick leaves, 12 leaves of other types, health insurance, etc Work-Life Balance: Expedia: Had a lot of work previously (55 to 60 hours a week). Now, the team is going through a transition and has a lot less work. Hardly 4 5 hours a day plus meetings. I am not sure when that would change but for now, it looks like it is not going to for the next 2, 3 months. The manager is non-technical and is a pain-in-the-ass in terms of few administrative things but otherwise fine Amazon: Not sure, but have heard mixed reviews about Amazon. I am not afraid to work for long hours or even to be on call, but the PIP culture scares me. I want to work hard on my own and without the fear of PIP hanging on my head Brand Value: Expedia: Well known in the travel industry space Amazon: Household name but one of the FAANGs Both have their own brand impact but Amazon certainly has a bigger name both famously and infamously Type of work: Expedia: A little bit of this and a little bit of that. I create tableau dashboards, data pipelines with python, SQL, and some ETL tools like SSIS, simple microservice dev using AWS Lambda like slack slash commands for dashboard refreshes and sending stats to leadership, some robotic process automation jobs like data scraping, SLA notification, and monitoring bots with python, etc. Here, I work with different kinds of teams with a mostly non-technical audience Amazon: While going through the interview process, I was told that the team creates business dashboards for various teams in India. One of the newer ones is Amazon Pay with whom they are working. On asking about the type of work, I was told that it can be anything to make whatever you are doing work. They vaguely mentioned redshift, PostgreSQL, Python, and AWS quick sight for dashboard creation Current Reputation: Expedia: Quite good. My team respects me and I got a good hike. However, promotion chances are grim considering I got promoted last year and Expedia is going through the COVID lul phase. Additionally, my manager and I share the same compensation level so I ain't getting promoted until he does! Amazon: Doesn't apply for now WFH Situation: Expedia: No new guidance to return back to the office at least for India Amazon: HR told me they have no new guidance and it might continue till Oct Based on the above factors and anything else that you have in mind, please let me know what you think about this. Which one should I choose? If you can also let me know the reason for your choice in the comments, it would be very useful for me. A request of a fellow engineer to my folks! Thank you! #dataengineer #amazon #dataengineerl5 #expedia #techcareer #tech
Don't go to amazon and ruin your life.
Why's that? Is it because of the pip stories?
Yes, every engineer will have to face that today or tomorrow
Any layoffs chances in expe due to covid?
Did not hear anything after the bloodbath throughout 2020. However, performance review norms are going to be strict now. So, never say never.
Come on, people ๐
Can anyone comment on this please?
52 votes - divided equally. And I thought it would be easy if I just asked the blind folks ๐

Haha, blind janta hates amazon because of the crazy horror stories people have shared here, that's why even after having such a big difference in TC it's still going 50:50 ๐
Do you think the TC is good? I feel only the joining bonus is good. Base is reduced
This will be the scene at a lot of companies. A lot of them are heavy on stocks. However, at 6yoe I do feel the Expedia tc of ~37 is a bit below the market. Why not interview at others as well, and join the ones with better employee experience?
Hi Op, apologies for posting here out of topic. Iโve my onsite for Amazon Bangluru DE 2 role in few weeks, can I DM you to get suggestions on preparation strategy?

Expedia and Amazon arenโt that far apart in brand name TBH. They are all well known companies in the tech world.
Who should I choose then?
