Amazon: On Focus / Dev plan for 5 months

Hi -- I was placed on Focus in November with a 2 week deliverable plan. I finished all the deliverables and in December my manager extended my focus and gave me a new deliverable plan for 1 month. I once again finished all the deliverables. In February my manager said that they were waiting to deliberate on my case and they would make a decision by first week of April and it is now almost May. In this time period my manager said I still have to track all my deliverables and that he will continue to report this to "said leadership". Am I being strung along? Or are they trying to get me to quit? I also just got my PCS and got no base increase and no RSUs (which I guess is expected). However, after this year I will make less than I did my first year as an SDE1 (I am currently and SDEII) so I feel like they might being trying to get me to quit on my own. Any advice for this situation? Anyone know what is happening behind closed doors? #pip #focus #devplan #layoff

Start interviewing.

They are waiting you to be frustrated and quit and they can save the huge severance. Why not you make them frustrated? They are human too 😜 Spend all your time in preparation and minimal time in office work

Document and take it to HR. Cannot change dev plans and goals in between. Once HR confirms you are out of it, change teams

Isn't HR the one trying to get me fired 😂 I didn't know that we cannot change dev plans goals in between but my manager told me he got "approved" to extend my focus

Not HR, but manager might have put to meet the URA quota. He has to share the dev plan and stick to timelines and commit to taking you out of it, once the dev plan completes successful. There is a extension in context that they are showing improvement but not change of goals. Like he cannot call out a new problem with you and ask you to do something else. Correct me if I am wrong amazon managers. All my knowledge is 3 years old. A lot of shit could have changed.

You didn’t get a raise or rsu’s based on last years overall performance. Looks like you passed the Focus but, if you slip up, that will be the end.

My manager said I am still on focus as of last week

What is happening behind closed doors? A detached "leadership" is playing around with spreadsheets and quotas. Your manager could potentially be trying to defend you or potentially be trying to sandbag you or potentially be clueless. Your manager is shit scared of bringing this conversation up with "leadership" every time. It's a dreadful conversation that they hope ends soon. You may ask why they haven't pipped you yet. It's likely that you were in a pool of 2-4 people in focus. They just found someone else to PIP last quarter and keeping you around in the pool this quarter. They could even have made some HR paperwork mistake last quarter so they are fixing the mistake this quarter which takes time. Sounds disgusting? Welcome to Amazon.

Take FMLA, prep and leave. Why hurt yourself so much when they don't care?

Your manager is emotionally manipulating you. They have the option to remove you from focus if they want. They are hedging their bets and lying to you that it is out of their control. Just leave or start documenting that this was a retaliation based on some event that happened before you were put on focus. Then start mentioning to HR that this is based on a protected class. Then start looking for another job.

They cannot keep you on the plan that long, but no raise and no stock means you are an L.E. Interview and wait. They are trying to save the $5k to $20k they would owe you if they terminate you and want you to resign.

And remember that HR is not your friend but the corporate enforcer.

Yes, they are trying to make you leave on your own. Don’t take the bait, make sure you get severance
