Amazon PIP targets and layoffs

Rumors are that if PIP and attrition targets are not met this year, Amazon will layoff again. Already, many decent performers on our team were put on sudden coaching plan and are being coerced to leave. What are odds of layoffs at Amazon in the first quarter? #severance #layoff #amazon

How else are you going to pay for GPUs for Q AI?

Rumors from where? I thought attrition is exceeding targets in AWS at least?

Microsoft spoiledev Dec 15, 2023

Why would pip targets not be met?

Amazon YoüAndMëh Dec 15, 2023

My org cut enough with the 2023 layoffs to stay below our precovid numbers... Don't know about the others....

Currently at LinkedIn there are 100s of Amazon job postings. How do you explain that?

Two things: 1) Amazon has hundreds of thousands of U.S. employees and as many abroad - even "hundreds" of openings across a company that vast is a pretty small percentage if they are just a few key positions in targeted orgs. 2) Amazon HR (like most companies) typically posts requisitions for roles that aren't actually open (and they'll even do phone screens for some of the best resumes they receive) to build the candidate pool and understand where the salary range is trending.

I am not sure about those arguments. But I could think of one. Amazon does not internally reallocate poeple. They have no mechanism other than individuals applying internally for open positions. The receiving teams do not show any obligation or empathy to accept any internal transfer if they are not convinced the candidate is better than any external hire. That creates a free for all uncoordinated environment where they are quietly laying off but still hiring. This is what happens in a tight environment. However if a large layoff is looming, like one in Jan 23 then they do freeze if any sort.

Idk in my part of AMZN the headcount plan was submitted as is with no top line adjustments. Thus far it’s been accepted. Think layoff, won’t happen or will be at select units.

Think of Amazon as hundreds of small organizations. Some have hiring open, lot of it is backfills. Most do not have it open and risk of layoffs is real

Layoff is a necessary tool to boost the AMZN stock price
