My manager has told me that I will be under focus for next 30 days and advising me to look outside for Jobs. He knows I have been a top performer but he is adamant to let me go. He said you can try to get out of Focus but If I were you he would look outside for jobs. I have seen a few other people being piped out in my org in last 1 year but I always thought It might be for their performance reasons but now it looks like it’s my turn to get piped out. What shall I do in this situation? I don’t think my manager would let me get out of focus/dev list no matter how hard I would try. Please help!!!!! Why would a manager let a top performer go instead of someone else? (Not questioning OP’s performance, just curious)
A bulk of PIP's unfortunate victims are the result of politics and not necessarily be based on performance. OP's team may have all high technical performers but he may be the least effective at playing the politics "game" that is our culture, so in a sense hes the worst of the best.
So even if you are a top performer you can get let go? How do you play the politics game to ensure your survival?

You have zero idea how this works apparently. This can happen to top performers based on a new manager (which happens every 2 quarters) not liking something. Working at Amazon was the most stressful time in my life worrying about that and seeing it happen. I saw an entire squad get pushed out or pip’d because the new manager in Seattle didn’t want to manage remotely.
