Seattle š«” thanks Amazonians š for their sacrifice. https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/community/amazon-return-to-office-downtown-seattle-revival https://www.axios.com/local/seattle/2023/07/19/amazon-workers-downtown-activity "Amazon employs 55,000 tech and corporate employees in Seattleās urban campus and an additional 10,000 in Bellevue and the Eastside, in Washington. Since May 2, 2023, these teams have been coming back to their downtown offices at least three days a week. From increased foot traffic at local businesses to increased ridership on public transportation, Amazonās decision has contributed to additional economic vibrancy for the cities. This not only supports the businesses themselves, but also the people they hire for jobs across industries like retail and hospitality. In fact, through analyzing foot traffic and anonymized transaction data from May 2020-2022 to 2023, we've seen the following increases in South Lake Union (SLU) and Denny Regrade:"
RTO long term ā¦ kill premanent remote
Why should permanent remote work be killed off? RTO wouldnāt stop companies from outsourcing or even using AI to take tech jobs.
Because PAN is jealous that people work remote making 70-80% of the money they make but paying 30% less taxes and 80% less to own a home thatās 3x larger than their rented bedroom
So youāre saying that Seattle is nothing without Amazon? Seems like a huge dependency, and also proves that no one actually likes cities.
I like Seattle, but have you ever been in downtown and SLU? You can definitely see why people donāt want to live there
And yet a lot of people live there so I donāt see why you are making an uninformed comment.
This is so stupid once you read itā¦with this massive increaseā¦.weāre back to 52% of 2019 _foot traffic_. They moved heaven and earth and pissed off a ton of employees to prop upā¦foot trafficā¦to half of its previous level. GREAT SUCCESS. Amazon PR must be so proud they got ppl to publish this
Watch it or it'll be 5 days. There is an extra 40pct of foot traffic right there.
And since when do we care about killing small businesses? Thatās what we do. And we do it because we offer something better. Just like working remotely is better.
Are you suggesting to make 5 days rto ?
Fuck Seattle.
I bet the new city council won't think so. I really hope I'm wrong. Good riddance to the current council members that are retiring who were very openly anti Amazon.
Good. Those of you who are salty about RTO should suck it up to keep the economy of Seattle humming.
Those who are salty about paying back their student loans should suck it up to keep the economy of the US from suffering more inflation.
Those who are salty about paying back their PPP loans should suck it up to keep the economy of the US from suffering more inflation. Oh wait...
Crime is Seattleās problem. People donāt want to go downtown due to violent, drugged up, or mentally ill homeless who wonder the city menacingly looking to scream at you, physically attack you, smoke fent beside you, or break into your car to steal your stuff. Cities without these problems have a much higher RTO rate.
Source?
A lady was shot by the Amazon HQ a couple weeks ago on the pathway I walk to work - I was close enough by to hear the gunshots. Itās physically dangerous to go to the office.
If you build more affordable housing in the city, you wouldn't need to force workers back to the office. Time to start thinking outside the box, times changed and we should too. For 3 years I've been investing in my local community instead of near work. What do you think this does to the small towns that have seen business boom and growth?
Why should downtown need to be revived in the first place? If it couldnāt survive without office workers, then it deserved to fail. No cares about retail and hospitality workers anyway considering those industries pay peanuts and would gladly switch to tech in a heartbeat. Remote work is better for the environment and for mental health anyways. TC: 90K
Agree on the last sentence. First paragraph is a bit obtuse
No one cares about retail and hospitality workers? Iām not a fan of forced RTO either but wow, thatās pretty dense.
