I was recently promoted to L6 in Amazon. My senior manager is looking for a L6 SDM and has expressed interest in transitioning me from SDE to SDM. I’m personally interested in the role because I want to try it out and feel that it pays more. I also feel it’s easier to crack SDM interviews outside Amazon at L6 level than it is to crack SDE interviews if I do decide to leave Amazon in an year or so. What are your opinions with respect to expectations from the role/ amount of work, any gotchas for me down the line ?
Hire to fire. Be prepared in advance to fill those PIP quotas.
What do you mean ? Would they force managers to fire even if team is performing well ? Also, just realized you’re Expedia…I’m looking for advice from ppl currently in this role.
I was there at Amazon for a while. Yes managers are forced to put employees on PIP even if they are all performing satisfactorily. To meet URA quotas.
Any advice on workload ? Will it go up/down compared to SDE L6 ?
Go up for sure
Up +1. Did the same transition recently.
