A friend in Microsoft with about 2.5 yoe, has an Amazon sde 2 offer. The issue here is that in his 2 years at MS he’s been working more like a PM than an sde(long story short). Hass little to no knowledge of working in a production environment. He is not bothered about pip(no visa issues)but he wants to give a good shot at this. How would you advise that he prepares inorder to make things better for him technically when he finally joins? What are the expectations of an sde2 in Amazon? Would he get sometime to ramp up?
Don’t do it. Just don’t. Don’t do it.
Why such big discouragement? Understand Amazon is a super high pressure , PIP haunted place, but don't some people thrive there and end up getting a lot from the switch?
@ex- Amazon, what is there to loose? He’s aware of pip. He also knows that he needs to protect his mental health when he resumes by putting in his best and not letting toxicity get to him. What else should he know?
SDE 2 at Amazon? What you are describing won't survive SDE 1 at Amazon
Well, I thought so too.
SDE isn't really that different from sde1. Both are basically doing the same work (that is, doing IC coding tasks) I really cannot tell the difference between SDE1s and 2s on my team
On previous team I was on at amzn my boss expected the sde2's to do sde3 level work. Those expectations make feel very hire to fire. Not pleasant.
@ISawElba. What would would you say would be the best use of time between now and joining inorder to be more technically prepared?
depends on the team. on some teams, SDE 2s know the system inside out and they’re expected to carry out from design to completion pretty complex projects, stuff that on other teams is handled by SDE 3s. If he’s going to AWS, the surface area of what he must know to do that is pretty big, from internal tooling and auth systems to AWS stuff available externally. in the past, there was more of a ramp up available to people I feel but lately if you’re joining, every single team has a set of goals leadership promised and if he’s an SDE 2 he’ll be on the hook for part of those goals even if new
Amazon extends SDE2 offer to anyone these days. Sde2 is the new sde1
Was extended last year. You should know it’s a leetcode, system design and Lp game.
SDE2 = have a pulse
Well, do i even ask what SDE1 is?
new grad, literally has to be micromanaged. What im saying might sound disrespectful but I was also a SDE1 at Amazon and i was clueless. You arent very independent until mid SDE2 at amazon. SDE 2 at Amazon is extremely weird since the difference between a new 2 and and almost 3 is crazy. Levels should probavly be split
SDE2 imo are SDE1s that require very little hand holding and can reasonably drive projects end to end. If you feel like you can do that then you are ready.

Since when cloud experience is crucial for SWE? They need to have a good understanding of Networks, operating systems and distributed systems so that they can work on any cloud or on-prem for that matter. With CI/CD in place, his day-to-day job involves more coding instead of clicking buttons on a cloud GUI. Your friend might be more capable than you are thinking. No matter how toxic Amazon can be (in the worse case), their interview process for sde 2 is not a joke. Not all developers work in a production environment directly as it is restricted. It is perfectly understandable. He has clearly demonstrated what he was capable of. He can learn the rest on the go.
Ohhh. Thanks. Do you thinks he should build some apps with his Amazon’s team current tech stack inorder to get more familiar with the languages and framework? I can’t really advise him on my own as I am <1 yoe.
