Right before the holidays I started interview process for SDM L6 possibly L7 ( they tell me exact level will be determined later). While I am still very early in the process, they have been asking for my compensation expectations.. I don't have enough data to answer that question, so looking for input here. Realistically, what can I expect? What should I ask for in terms of base, bonus, equity? I know base is limited. If that makes a difference, total package will include relocation. Thank you Editing for TC TC: 170k
2M base 17M RSU, 60M sign on bonus. Gym membership 401k match
Sounds decent, but what he is not telling you is that it is shitty 401k match.
Don't tell them a number and don't share your current comp if asked. I was so naive when they amazon asked me how much I was making and I told them all. Biggest mistake.
What did they do? Weren’t you able to negotiate further if initially lowballed?
L7 ask for 800k , L6 600k. Don’t reveal your current salary.
Base versus rsu versus sign on?
@Tesla Amazon offers are little peculiar. Focus should be on TC you will end up making each year. So if TC is 800k, you will end up making a total of 800k per year. Base will most likely be capped at 160k for Seattle. 5% and 15% stock vesting in Y1 and Y2 are compensated by huge cash sign-on in Y1 and Y2. So for 800k TC, a very rough calculation for 4 years would look like: Y1: base 160k, 80k worth stock vest, 560 sign on (extra ~47k in each month’s paycheck) Y2: base 160k, 240k worth stock vest, 400k sign on (extra ~34k in each month’s paycheck) Y3: base 160k, 640k worth stock vest (320k vests in every 6 months) Y4: base 160k, 640k worth stock vest (320k vests in every 6 months)
TC or GTFO.
Any lol
Tell them that you expect them to be competitive, and you can discuss when you have an offer in hand.
To be clear, offer will be based on how you do on the interviews. Offer could start at ~300k for SDM (L6)… and same for Sr. SDM (L7) with a starting offer around 500k. L7 are normally quite senior and leader of leaders, with good tech knowledge and background. If you’re managing IC today or small team (~less than 30) you will likely considered for L6
And don’t hope to get upleveled after the interview. The loop will be different for l7 vs L6. No way you will get l7 offer even if you excel in the L6 interview loop. Make sure you are looped to your expectations.
Don't give them any numbers until after all interviews have gone well. And never give them your current comp!
That's a bullying tactic. Don't answer. Also, don't talk to Amazon. Biggest mistake you'll ever make.
Can it really be much worse than my current employer?
