Amazon Seattle L5 vs Google Bangalore L3

Jan 23 29 Comments

Hi all,

I am currently working in Amazon Hyderabad as l5. I have an offer to move to seattle with tc as 180k .

Recently i got an offer from google Bangalore for l3 with tc around 40 lakh INR.

Amazon offer looks really good in terms of current salary but people have suggested me to prioritize my career by moving to Google.

Everyone suggesting you to not come to Seattle are already in the US. Don't listen to them on US cons.
No one from US will move to India if you present them the option.
Salary is low but consider this, Amazon will file your H1B and then you can switch.
Or you can get 1 TT rating and your salary will increase. Why would you not work in a HQ as SDE-2 and take remote Google office with a downlevel?
Forget Google, you will get lot of high paying jobs once on H1B

      Wow!
      You read this OP.
This is why I suggested don't listen to Blind comments, all are in US and don't want people to come here but they themselves would not leave US even for Canada, forget India!

L5 is SDE II at Amazon and L3 is new grad/fresher. Why would you consider a downlevel? Serious question

Op, I am one of those who has friends who moved from Google blr and I can tell you pros and cons:

    Pro of Google blr job:
    1) you will save more or same as what you earn in US.
    2) no immigration shit. If you are married, your spouse works - your best bet is come in l1a and get eb1c. Everything else is shit. You will die waiting for GC. Current wait times is 150 years, literally a denial for being born in India, even though you have nothing to do with it. Your spouse can't work and will become depressed and everything goes south.
    3) never miss family.
    4) lots of household help

Cons(pro US not necessarily pro amzn)
    1) low pollution.
    2) work - projects - widening horizons in terms of skills.
    3) pay - 3x than India but expense is more, so savings become roughly similar.

will go back after sometime is hard if you have kids and family. Your life situation will change. So don't bank on it.

I am sorry but how are savings roughly similar? Please spill out the details because mine show a 3x saving increase. As a data point: my base is around 160k and I save roughly 4l per month.

Come to Seattle, I'm in US, and believe me, I'll and nearly everyone tries to stay as long as possible in US, because there are tons of opportunities here. Once you come to US, and Amazon files H1B, you'll be in a pool of money and hopefully you'll get your GC filed.
People who say don't come to US, would never leave US. They just don't want to have more competition. You come here and you'll see. Obviously it takes time to adjust but the standard of living is drastically different.
My question: Do you want to work in a place where you have to spend 90 minutes traveling, or do you want to work at the Headquarters of one of the biggest companies, drive a Mercedes, and in one of the most beautiful cities in US (I know it rains but Seattle is beautiful). And people who say you'll save nearly the same, are shit.
You can easily save $60K in Seattle with a TC of $180K. You should know, Seattle is tax free city

Well you could do the same move from within Google and go to Seattle and earn much more than you would in Amazon because of much better refreshers.

And then you would probably not even bother moving even after getting H1 because the company is genuinely concerned about WLB and doesn’t overwork people or have an unbearable oncall shift.

    +1 to google

+1 more to google. If you have a spouse, their opinion is probably relevant too. Moving halfway across the world is a big life change, G vs A should really be the least of your considerations with this

Take Google. Move to US in a year (no interviews) if you wanna. Or to Zurich. Or Munich. Or London. Or Sydney. Or Singapore. See what I mean?

What’s the big deal with 1 year of waiting in India anyway.

If you move via Amazon, you will be working for Amazon till you land a H1B - sometimes that could be 3 years.

And trust me, Google is a step up from Amazon in every imaginable way as an employer.

Amazon will file for H1 as soon as you join here. You can then interview for Google after getting H1.

Finally it depends on whether you want to be in India or come here.

180K is low for your experience but that is what all companies do to L1 folks. However it is more than sufficient to live here.

H1 lottery is not guaranteed though. He might be stuck at Amazon for years, even if he doesn't like it.
