TC: 200K/year Hi, everyone. I am currently working as a software engineer at AT&T in Dallas (Texas), and my current TC is 92.5k/year + a potential 9% bonus. Although my current TC is not as high, my job is fairly stable; no PIP, my managers and co-workers are very nice, and my WLB is very good. Should I leave AT&T for Amazon? Although Amazon has a higher prestige, their PIP process and toxic culture feel very scary. I don't know my org and team yet, but I've also heard that Lab126 is even worse. Please help me decide :( #Amazon Update: the org is FireTV
If you're planning to stay where you're forever, then don't go. If not, taking Amazon's offer will open up a lot of gates in the future
Stay at att. You will regret moving. I also took Amazon due to pay and thought stepping stone but ultimately no one truly cares. It’s a toxic shithole and you won’t learn anything. I wouldn’t hire an Amazonian myself. Avoid avoid avoid. I wish I stayed in previous company. Also know that layoffs are still happening in this shithole, stay at att until you get an offer from a different faang.
Yeah, kind of thinking the same thing. Not sure if it's worth for me to relocate to a vhcol when the new job is not even stable. Thank you for your input tho!
If you are a US citizen I would definitely go and keep applying to go elsewhere. Yes it's going to be tough but it's worth a shot. I don't know what you have to lose. You could also leverage this offer with your current employer.
Thanks. My current position at ATT is non-negotiable since it's a "2 year Development Program". Layoffs, PIP, and job instablity just give anxieties, especially when the location is so expensive and far away from home 😔
Everything is negotiable, they may change your position if they want to keep you. If you can't handle the pressure and powering through uncertainty then it's probably not worth it. At the end of the day, make the decision you can live with
Find put more about the team. Try to get into AI or AWS teams to help with next move. Change for work, money will follow. And grind a little please. I genuinely mean that. WLB is important, but find a challenging job. If you remain Tier 3/4 companies, your pay will go as high as $125k in TX maybe in next 10 years. Then it is too late to change to a high paying top tier company. Just know that this is the alternative of not challenging yourself. And Amazon is toxic is what I’ve heard many times. This is because getting in is easy, staying is hard. You need to work hard, perform, keep up the intensity and have good interpersonal skills (aka boot licking) as well. Use it as a step to move up. 2 years till joining bonus or 4 years till all stock vesting. Choose your time frame and stick to it. Best of luck.
Thank you for the encouragement. Will definitely consider a little more.
Man, go for it! Overall, Amazon is good place to work. I have been working there for 5 years. I was working for different teams/managers. I have never experienced strange situations that are described here on blind.
What role?
Considering the hike in pay you should take Amazon. See for 1-2 years quit and search else where. You will get into high pay band with Amazon
That is something to consider. However, not sure if I will be able to make it since Lab126 sounds like a sinking ship. It's also prone to layoffs since it's an R&D group.
And if you get laid off from Amazon, you will get a fat severance and now have Amazon on resume to find a different gig. If you have the risk appetite, willingness to move to the bay area and desire to move up and learn, I would say go for it.
I had to make a similar decision. I worked at AT&T, left to Amazon, and eventually returned to AT&T. I personally think you should take Amazon offer as it will definitely open more doors and expose you to the industry. Just do not plan on staying there for a long time (< 2 years) and understand that a lot of teams at Amazon have no WLB and many can be toxic. I am glad I spent time at Amazon but wouldn't return.
Oh wow, thank you for sharing your experience!
Use it as a stepping stone, tbh. The Bay has great jobs, but staying at Amazon more than 18 months in the Bay will set you back. That TC is base for Bay area jobs.
