Got offer for SDE-2 retail org, Amazon Vancouver. Currently working in Tokyo. How different Amazon Vancouver (Retail Org) is in term of culture, WLB compare to Amazon Seattle? Is it same story as Seattle office or teams here are better in term of manager's misuse of power to kick out people, WLB etc. As not many people have talked about Vancouver office here, any input will be really helpful. TC: 175K CAD YOE: 5 #Amazon #Vancouver #Canada
Somewhat off topic, but dang, what’s it like working in Tokyo? Are you from there originally?
Not from Tokyo. For me, it is good experience till now. People are good, treat others nicely and are respectful. It's just I am here for like 5 years now so want to explore more
Ahhh thanks for the answer! I’m actually flying back to the states right now from my second trip there. I love visiting but feel like I wouldn’t fit actually living/working there for a prolonged period.
What is the base salary?
133K CAD
How hard was an interview? LC medium?
Ya it was mostly medium. I think they focus more on System Design and Leadership Principal.
Lol, nobody answered what I asked for in my post.. Seems most of them there are quite happy !!
Can you remember the questions asked during the onsite? Also, have you resumed at the Vancouver office? How is the experience?
Culture is highly toxic. I never worked at Seattle office, but reading the NYT article from 2015 I can relate to most of things there. WLB is shit too. The worst part is your colleagues and coworkers continuously backstabbing and humiliating each other. There’s no sense of team or camaraderie. Ask more if you’re interested. As far as your offer goes it’s pretty decent for SDE II.
Hi Thank you for your reply. Only you have answered what I have asked actually. Which org you are talking about? or is it all org wide? In my understanding it is very much depend on managers and coworkers. I am not sure how unlucky I am going to be. Any suggestion you want to give to new joiner, how to survive there for atleast 2 years? Thanks
I am in AWS. Theres definitely lots of decent teams and managers than can shield their employees from this crap. But WLB seems poor everywhere. Commonly I stay in the office till 8pm and I see folks in other teams in the office as well. I think you’ll be ok. As long as you’re not fighting for promotion, the office politics and all the negativity should not affect you. My advice is Leetcode and apply for Microsoft or salesforce the moment you get your Canadian PR.
How long to convert from work visa to pr @bezzjefos?
Usually very fast. IIRC Amazon would sponsor you after you’ve been here for 6 months. And the process after that takes 6 months in Canada, unless you have a complicated case.
Thanks
If you're interested in staying in Tokyo and interested in indeed, DM me.
How did you apply to Amazon Canada from Tokyo? Did the recruiter reached out to you or you got referral or LinkedIn.

TC is too low for Vancouver. Vancouver is more expensive than Seattle.
Ya I know as its very less compare to same role in Seattle office. Currently I am looking for learning opportunity and want to move out of Tokyo so I am ok with this offer. Just more curious about culture and WLB..
175k is high for Vancouver tech companies. Most software engineers don’t get anywhere close that in Vancouver.
