Amazon Virtual Onboarding & Remote Start

I am set to join Amazon in a a couple weeks and the state stay at home in Washington SHOULD be lifted right when I am due to join, but I am not sure if the office will be open so have opted for a virtual onboarding. I am wondering what the virtual orientation is like and if it is worth it to try and hold out for an in person orientation instead. After orientation, what is remote work like the first couple weeks at Amazon.

Eh. Just do virtual orientation. We don't know for sure how long wfh will last and since you're new and don't have any deadlines or major expectations now isn't a terrible time to be wfh.

No deadlines or major expectations? Are you just sitting there?

Goldman Sachs goldyboi Apr 9, 2020

Not for the first few weeks. You're just getting onboarded. You don't need to spend 40 hours a week to do it. Take your time but don't sit their twiddling your thumbs

For virtual onboarding, does a candidate need to relocate if he is on H1B visa? Not sure if H1B visa has any site restrictions.

Amazon ppGm72 May 7, 2020

H1b needs one to be on site so relocation is mandatory unless your hr makes it easy give the current situation

Amazon zdbM15 May 18, 2020

H1b candidate should be 60miles within the address mentioned on the visa application

How’s onboarding going on so far?

It has been rocky. I officially start monday but no VPN key, no laptop, no idea WTF I will do Monday with no access to anything. I don't really love that I am getting meeting invites to my personal email and several future co-workers are trying to email me on my personal address.

Salesforce Ohano May 5, 2020

Most companies will send the laptop until the last moment

Should I check with my recruiter if setting up home office is reimbursed or they don't do it at all? Starting 5/11.

Amazon fpjI41 May 5, 2020

It should be if you keep your receipts and keep it reasonable. You should be able to do this I think on day 1.

Amazon zDqT52 May 19, 2020

Wait until you start to get guidance on the amount you’ll be reimbursed. Some things like chair/desk is not reimbursed but some IT equipment is.

Going through the same but was told the first two weeks will be virtual orientation which is watching videos around 14 LP. I think the hiring manager are having to learn this as well so i suspect it will be rocky for hiring manager going through this for the first time.

2 weeks for a virtual onboarding? Are u they training you to be an astronaut? Why such a long onboarding?

Oracle LMhh44 May 5, 2020

LOL, it actually goes longer and part of a larger plan for new Amazon employees. At Oracle, every employees has to go through a yearly Immersion training which happens through the 1st QTR somewhat similar so far as I can tell.

Been onboarding remotely too. Straight up terrible since there’s no sense of direction.

Wayfair vNxL53 May 17, 2020

Make sure to bring it up

Amazon fk-meG69 Jun 7, 2020

Same. Struggle fest

Amazon Wydv57 May 5, 2020

Run.

Amazon Anonymph May 5, 2020

Just relax... communicate with your manager not write a post here..

Wayfair vNxL53 May 17, 2020

I think posting here helps, but also do communicate with your manager

Amazon FSaQ52 May 5, 2020

You will have a onboarding buddy, embark plan with plenty of stuff to follow. I did that a month ago, all virtual and worked fine for me

Amazon Alkist May 6, 2020

Gone through that a month ago too, everything was quite smooth, just had to wait for laptop to arrive for a couple of weeks.

Amazon dekhi01 Jun 4, 2020

hey @FSaQ52, how long till the time ur manager ask you to deliver first task?
