A lot of Amazonians stay because it pays the bills and looks good on their resume. Only a few truly love working for the company
Correction: the stock vesting schedule, not pay
The stock vesting is crap: 5%, 15%, 20%/20%, 20%/20%. Totally back-end loaded
Worked there two years and: * The MSFTies took over several departments, brought more of their friends and started the 7 kingdoms. Yes, that's how we called it internally because all 7 directors would fight constantly and backstab each other. Sev2? JFC they would blame each other in excellence reviews and guess who would have to work extra? The peasants. Mind you, I saw this from a vantage point (principal). * Awful culture. Saw many crappy SWEs getting promoted over others for all sorts of reasons: they were part of the ethnicity kingdom and that director wanted more power, discussions between male and female SWEs was about how the former deserved it for all the hard work and the latter they would rip apart her promo packet. In short, cutthroat politics. * Frugality is just another word for cheap. Is one thing to ask to be more responsible on the technical resources you use, is another to be building from the ground up 20 35-story high buildings in Seattle and not add ONE SINGLE GYM for your employees. "There are plenty of options around town". Guess what? Tons of execs own the gyms, cafeterias and restaurants around SLU of COURSE they're not going to give something like that for free even if that helps your employees to deal with stress. In short, Amazon doesn't give two shits about their employees. For the record I was in CDO not AWS.
Same experience
The exec owns a lot of these businesses?
I work right next to the office so might as well. Not really a lot of money in my case.
Is this the regularly scheduled "hate on Amazon" thread or am I missing the point of the now.do link?
Pays my bills.
I love it here.
+1
Which org?
Pay bills but I don’t know which place is better than this. I feel any other company will be same, so I stay here
I love working at Amazon
I love Amazon. If you want do some impactful work, this is a good place. If you land in a shit team or something, it's pretty easy to find something else and move.
How is moving from one team to another encouraged or discouraged? Changing job roles significantly is allowed and/or promoted? Is amazon a place to stay at for a long time (20yrs)?

The end of Backdoor Roth?!
Recently there's been a concern about too many Microsoft people joining Amazon and poisoning the culture with their backstabbing politics and bureaucratic outlook.
Why hire them if you don’t like them? Your company’s fault for hiring people with poor cultural upbringing
I agree. Also I'm not saying they are bad people, they just need to detox after Microsoft. They're smart and capable people. Problem is Amazon has been hiring so fast that sometimes there are no existing role models for them to learn the culture from, you get a nest of all ex softies and it's poisonous.
