Amazon applied scientist L5
How is the amazon interview process for applied scientist roles? I’m still due to give my first round of interview for Applied scientist L5 role. I wanted to know if I can convert this to an L4 data scientist role instead, (since I don’t have a SWE background and enough YOE)? Is that possible to do/ ask before the interview process? Need suggestions.
If you want to try out for a DS instead, ask before the interview.
Why change it to L4 DS? Applied Scientist family generally has 1 step higher salaries and I believe expectations as compared to DS or SDE. So AS L5 would be in a similar band as DS L6. I think you could go for L5 DS instead
It's inadvisable to convert to a DS role. A DS role at Amazon is not really Applied ML and is more about pulling data through SQL etc. It's also a significant salary step-down from the AS role that you're being interviewed for. Interviews for the AS process - 1) DSA interview 2) ML Depth interview 3) ML Breadth interview 4) Some sort of presentation to the team about your current work followed by some cross-questioning 5) Bar Raiser/ Leadership Principle
How is the coding round of the AS interview? LC easy or some medium/hard too?
For the coding part, you are expected to clear the SWE 1 bar. So LC Medium/Hard can be expected. However, if you're being interviewed by a scientist, the questions won't be directly from LC and would require some original thinking.
You should definitely let the hr know, but I will suggest you not to do it. DS and AS are two very different roles. You don’t need much sde experience to be an AS. Like me, I was a research faculty in UCxxx before joining amazon. For the interview I’ve involved, I never seen that we changed an AS role to DS. It is more common to see that 1) lower the AS level by one; or 2) change the AS role to machine learning engineer or RS.
