In the last year I’ve seen hundreds of people leave Amazon, the most concerning is that a large portion are in Senior Leadership level - VPs and Directors. Amazon increased corporate wages because they knew share value would go down substantially due to its Q2 earnings report. If you’re slightly smart, you know this was a strategic move from the company to maintain comp levels and avoid attrition (it was not a raise but a market adjustment). Given the culture reputation at amazon being incredibly toxic, what are your thoughts on Amazon’s future as it relates to attracting and retaining talent?
After the last PCS it'll definitely continue to get worse, at least for another few months
Assuming you’re still at Amazon, how’s the morale in your team? My team the morale is awful, people are always in a bad mood, over worked and burned out. Several of my engineers are interviewing or have left and we aren’t able to hire to backfill in the rate people are leaving. I’m in Product, and several PMs are also looking to leave or have already left.
Which team/s are you referring to
Amazon has relied on its policies to get to where it is now. And clearly those policies are no longer useful and are actually being destructive. The company will have to evolve or it will do an IBM and start to fade.
I agree 100%
I’m not so sure honestly. Yes the culture sucks, but money talks. As long as amazon can be competitive in pay employees will take as much abuse as amazon can dish out. That’s just the reality of the situation. However Amazon cannot be painful if the pay is not competitive enough
Love the convenience of Amazon, don’t like that it has completely clobbered all brick and mortar stores. Now there’s nothing to do on weekends besides going to Costco or hiking because there aren’t many interesting stores left.
And where there are interesting boutiques the prices are absolutely obscene
Lol, your idea of a weekend is going to stores?
The current market downturn and pandemic is finally biting Amazon in the ass. I am an ex Amazon worker myself so I an praying for it’s down fall. The pandemic has certainly made it a worker’s market. Now that workers have more power, people are choosing to avoid Amazon. Even with Amazon’s insane TC offerings I still would not rejoin. The culture and zero benefits are way too shitty for anyone to want to join. Had a coworker tell me he had an L5 offer for 350k which he turned down for 280k due to Amazon’s terrible image. That should tell you that company image is everything.
There are companies that thrive during downturns. Amazon is too big to fail plus their AWS will keep their failing businesses afloat.
Couldn’t agree more w/ Twilio. After I leave I can’t imagine ever going back - regardless of comp.
More importantly What’s your total comp
Amazon will never run out of people willing to work there. Too many people just want the FAANG $$$ and brand name.
There are visa slaves too !
That’s why you see Apple Store Employees, Amazon Warehouse Workers/Drivers, and Google TVCs. These big companies even have subclasses of employees. If companies want to do DEI right, start by helping the workers on the lowest rung.
Honestly, Amazon will be fine. What you deem toxic culture is exciting for many who choose to work there. And those people are not stupid, they’ll figure it out
Bigger issue is where these senior folks headed to. I’d hate to report to such LP jerks.
Yes! That’s a very valid point. I’d hate to report to an ex-Amazon
Lots of ex AZ at my workplace. Not a great culture fit.
Always use Amazon to get high offers and use their offer to pressure the other employers to pay you well. Never join. Just apply.
Smart man
Or woman (social bias is terrible but I don’t blame you, we’re all conditioned)
