Who are these retards asking for dictatorship in India?
At what level do they dispense with the “give me a time when” rehearsed Leadership Principles format, and allow for it to be a conversation between two human beings? Hard to imagine they subject VP level candidates to that?
Your current level doesn’t matter..what level are you interviewing for? Manager? Sr Manager? Director?
Director.
At Director level, I’d expect a higher scrutiny in terms of LPs. Amazon takes LPs seriously…think of it this way, Amazon wants to predict your future success from past actions. Not what you think should be done in hypothetical situations. Your interviewer will calibrate questions appropriate to the level. This is pretty much the norm across tech companies. I just completed a director level interview at Google. Similar LPs, worded differently
Principles are core to Amazon . This is how they figure how you think, operate and if you will fit in the culture. I don’t see anything wrong. I have seen VPs from big companies coming in as L7 managers at Amazon and answering those questions.
Nothing wrong with it… they can interview whichever way they want. How do they test though whether you haven’t just embellished or straight up made up a whole bunch of stories? If you know ahead of time what they are going to ask, and what answers they value?
Yeah, it’s possible to BS your way through, but given 5 rounds - it will not be easy to do that . Also they check the tech / skill depth with carefully chosen questions.
Such an immature comment. OP can't have an opinion? All I see is someone trying to question the format and figure out why it's so crucial and why someone couldn't fake it. If Jamie Dimon would have stuck with the norms, he wouldn't have created a beast of a bank. It's ok to disagree if you are still willing to listen and have an honest debate. That's what learning and growing is about.
You’re probably right. But that’s exactly my point. I’m questioning whether this is the right way to identify most suitable candidates, especially at a senior level. I’d say it leads to a lot of false positives and negatives.
I think it depends on the interviewer. I have had internal loops with “tell me about when” kind of LP questions and have had internal loops with a 30 minute conversation of what I have done and what I want to do next. Prefer the latter but also tells you a lot about the interviewer :)
I was once asked by Amazon HR. "Give me a time when you have thought about applying to Amazon." I couldn't answer and failed the interview loop 😂
You should have told them "Every hour by the rate at which you spam my inbox"
As a Director you are expected to describe your experience through LPs and with the STAR format. That’s how the company evaluates whether you have the right experience and will adapt to the culture. I interview often and I am able to tell when someone is BSing their way around. LPs are embedded in everything we do. We didn’t have LPs in the prior companies I worked for and I am a true believer of the Amazon LPs. Also as a Director you will have between 6-8 interviews and will require 3 recommendations that will also be interviewed. I recommended those to learn the LPs and it was a good decision
Wait; they interview people who recommend you?
I spent so much time rehearsing my made up answers but I didnt make it that far because I couldn't build tic-tac-toe from scratch in 20 minutes.
Sounds like skill issue
Well I do work at Lowes......
OP it’s difficult to embellish your stories. You will easily get caught by a Senior interviewer once they ask probing questions. The answers expected are widely divergent for an IC vs a Senior Leader
Loop with L8s is easier as compared to the L6/L7 ones. Also, stories can be(most are) made up if you have experience and tenure.
TC?
Why don’t you just rehearse?
To ask the question is to answer it.
