Been reading around blind about windows/ubuntu vs mac for amazon sde1. I’ll be joining Alexa in a few days was wondering which laptop should I get? I am very used to ubuntu and despise mac. Heard internal tools work better on mac #engineering #software #swe Tc:175k Yoe 1.5
Get something big enough to put a whole bunch of cool stickers on it
Windows with WSL or a VM if you need graphical Ubuntu.
Literally everyone uses a Mac in devices. The few windows people are just actively making their lives difficult
this. use what your team and org use.
Yea I am not a big fan of mac but got one when I joined after reading some stuff online. Definitely the best choice I made. Mac is still not my favourite but it's alright but the internal tools and documentation is soo much better for mac. Can't imagine doing much in Windows.
You are gonna end up using cloud desktop to build code anyways. Your laptop is just a terminal to connect. Pick whatever you prefer.
I am in AWS and almost exclusively Mac is supported for internal tools, haven't come across such support for windows. But damn man, Mac sucks big time. Multitasking in Mac is a nightmare. Wtf is cmd+tab and mission control, I hate every second of it. Windows is so much better at this.
I know right. Windows run the world, best ever to accomplish so much with little effort
I started in Alexa on Monday. I got the 14 inch M1 pro, 32 GB RAM
14 inch good, or do you wish you had 16?
Yeah the 14 is great. Most of the time it’s plugged into a monitor anyways
Happy Ubuntu dev here. I'd take Ubuntu or Windows over Mac any day at Amazon.
Is it hard to setup
No, either IT can image your machine for you or you get a Windows machine and follow the wiki to image yourself. You can either install from the Amazon vended install or install vanilla Ubuntu, then run an 'amazonify' script.
Windows run the world
Lol no
I hope this was sarcasm 🤣
