Amazon levels.

I'm a l6 at Google. Tc 600. Got a message today from an Amazon principal engineer saying my background looked really useful to his (important) team. Since I wouldn't join without a good bump, what level would I need to get to get a 750 tc package? Other sources seem to indicate it would require senior principal. Is that even possible as an external hire?

Should be possible. Also, if its important team you can get same comp on principal.

750k is a fair amount above band for L7 in Seattle, but just a bit above band in Bay Area. However, VP exceptions for above band offers are pretty common for top talent hires from Google. You do not need an L8 leveling to get to 750k. Just set expectations that you are already staff level and are only interested in PE interview loop. You will need to come in through different interview process, recruiters, etc.

How did you get so much at L6? That’s not typical is it? Also how did you climb that level?

The work environment at Amazon can be a lot more intense. It seems that the pressure is higher than at Google. If I were making 600k I wouldn’t jeopardize a potentially more engineering friendly environment to go work for Jeff Bezos, but that’s just me.

Which product or org is it for?

First of all, you are in a good place. Specially 600k at Staff/T6 is amazing. Are you close to T7? If yes, my advice would be to stay, get to that and a lot more options will open - Amazon, FB, MSFT. For Amazon, I am also looking for getting an idea about L7 offer ranges. And what I gathered is that 650k could be the upper limit. Exceptions are hard to get solid data on. But Amazon stock price is always a gamble. That shit has the most unpredictable upward potential compared to the other competitors. Also, if the team is AWS - it can be a great thing for your resume. Specially aat L7 or L8 you would probably architecting an e2e product!

A lot more options will be open? No — OP does not have this problem. The options are open.

Microsoft phuzed Jan 13, 2019

@RobynHood - clarifying: a lot more options in the upper level will open. How about that now? I really do mean it though! Jumps of median TC between levels whether you are in FB(E6/E7/E8), Google (T6/T7/T8), Amazon (L6/L7/L8) or MS (66/67/68) etc is huge.

Don’t people say amazon caps out at 160K salary? How do you get up to 600K TC?

Microsoft ImAwesome Jan 13, 2019

Rest is all stock

DigitalOcean bsusorh Jan 13, 2019

So how does that translate to your normal paycheck? Like if you’re on 160K base and the rest is stock are you basically just waiting to sell the stock whenever you want some extra cash?
